Diesel Max
93 F-250 4X4 - 7.3
I just bought a 92 F250 with 144K original miles. It has the 7.3 with the aftermarket Banks sidewinder turbo kit and transmission controler. I know this is going to sound impossible but here's the problem. I drove the truck just under 300 miles and it used 7 quarts of Delo 15w 40. Here is what I have found so far.
1. Truck is dry in the engine compartment and underneath, no leaks or wet spots anywhere.
2. No oil in engine coolant, radiator or over flow bottle.
3. No water in oil or on dipstick
4. No engine oil in transmission, although I don't know how it would get there in the first place.
5. No signs of oil in tail pipe, no oil dripping out of exhaust system any where.
6. Truck shows a very, very light blue smoke when at idle, however does not smoke driving down the road at a steady speed or deceleration
7. Truck has fair amount of black smoke under acceleration or pulling a hill
8. Turbo spools and whistles and shows very good power, turbo gauge seems to work normal.
9. Truck seems to run and idle fine (smooth, no knocks or abnormal sounds) and doesn't seem to have any loss of power
10 Pulled the lid off the air cleaner box, filter is clean, no oil on it or in main part of the box.
11. On the side of the air box, there is some kind of round, grey valve or diaphram that has a hose that connects from it to an area right below the engine oil fill cap. There was a small amount of oil comming out of that valve and dripping into the air box.
12. At the rear of the air box there a 90 degree rubber hose that goes into the inlet of the turbo. There was a small puddle of oil in the bottom of that hose.
13. My son followed me for 300 miles (basically right on my bumper the whole time) and there was no oil on the front or winshield of the car he was driving (seems as if it was burning that much oil, it would have been blowing out the tail pipe all over the back of the truck and front of the car he was following me in)
14. There is no oil leakage any where around the turbo or oil lines connecting to the turbo
I have done my best to give all the details and I know this sounds like I'm on drugs or impossible but it happened and has me freaked out. Sorry this is so long but I know the folks on this forum can't help without details. Can someone please help me and tell me what to look or how to diagnose how or where this oil is going. I know most all diesels burn some oil but at the rate of 7 quarts every 300 miles, I'll be spending more $$$ on oil, then on diesel fuel !!
