While driving home from hunting trip, every now and then I noticed a noise from rear of truck. As I was stopped at an intersection, put passenger side window down and listened as I eased the clutch out to take off. It was immediately obvious there was a serious problem so I pulled into the parking lot of a small country store. Thought sure it was a u-joint issue, crawled under truck grabbed drive shaft, everything seemed tight, walked around the other side and eyes focused on that rear tire! DAMN! Chill up my spine when I thought about what could have happened..... Needless to say this required a roll back ride home. Later discovered I installed the wrong lug nuts when rotating tires just before the trip.

Also, how did you install the wrong lug nuts? Like front to rear? Or wrong all together?

those aluminum rims need a shoulder lug nut, he prolly used a conical type lol

When not hauling the camper I have wheel spacers on rear to widen stance to match front axle. When hunting season comes, remove the spacers, rotate tires, etc, however the spacer uses a shorter (not as deep)lug nut than standard stud which has a long deep lug nut. I was simply in a hurry and neglected to switch the nuts. Five of eight lugs snapped off on passenger side so at one point I was driving 70 mph on four lane with three lugs holding tire on! After the roll back ride, replaced all 16 studs, reinstalled proper lug nuts and have made several 220 mile trips with no problems. Re-checked torque on lug nuts 4 times on the first trip to insure they didn't work loose, everything seems to be good. Yep, I got lucky!

No, these wheels do not utilize shoulder style nut.

I'm surprised they don't have the thin steel on the end. I've seen those be pop off from longer studs. Lol

Yeah, most aluminum wheels I've seen use conical. Even the jetta has a conical lug bolt.

I have a set on the ranchero that uses the shoulder type,
I had this happen to me when I first got my 87,
but I was unlucky enough to have the rim pass me up.

Where ya at around Pa? Lots of deers out my way. Hunters claims they aren't around but my corn fields beg to differ.

About hour south of Penn State College, (Lewistown area). We have some nice deer in this area also, very rural with many dairy farms. The deer in pic was a trophy Maryland public land deer. Going to WV this weekend lookin for more.

Yup lots of pretty farms up that way. Went to Lewistown a couple years ago and bought some grain bins. I'm about an hour west of Altoona. About dead smack between Pittsburgh and Altoona.
