since the motor needs to be overhauled now i have a few questions. first off, i plan on waiting to buy anything until after my wedding in july. the plans are to rebuild the engine with a turbo, rebuilding a zf5 to put in it, and rebuilding my transfer case while its all torn apart. spend the money, do it all at once, and have it done for winter. hopefully. now for the questions: should i replace the pistons, if so im thinking of just getting this kit rebuild kit, and will probably get a moose pump for the turbo, mine needs work anyway, and should i piece together a turbo kit for it or just buy the hypermax one? thanks for any advice.

Get the Hypermax kit. The time it will save you will be worth the money you would have saved, and doing all you have to do, you will be glad you saved the time.

After reading your post about the low oil and what the engine is doing now, I really think this is the best decision. If you are going to pull it all the way down, I'd rebuilt the entire engine. You'll likely need new pistions as they were likely damaged during the low oil operation. Plus, pistions aren't really expensive for these IDI's.

I'm with Mel, if you have the funds, get a new kit (Hypermax, Banks, whatever), it will save you time hunting down all the little parts that get lost with used kits, plus you know it will be in great shape for years to come.

Same is true for the ZF5, espeically if there are known issues with the one you are going to use. Better to get it rebuilt now, then when you try to get the project on the road and it's *****'ed. Trust me, that SUCKS!!!

thanks for the input. there wont be much progress besides tearing it down between now and july 30. and finding all of the parts so that once i have the funds i can just order them.

Diesel Brad has posted this information before and I will pass it on to you. He has had great luck with this rebuilder (Dan at MidWest Transmission I think) and he can apparently provide parts at a reasonable cost. I'm sure he could get T-case parts as well.
