After picking up a J33300 on ebay I have decided something must be wrong with it. I have not been able to keep the timing display within 8 degrees and now the RPM reading is jumping between 300 to 2000 while keeping the throttle steady at appox. 2000. Today I tried the luminosity probe method with a more consistant degree reading but the RPM reading still inaccurate. So out of frustration I ordered a Ferret. I am thinking when it arrives and I get a solid reading I can condem the K-M. to repair,[if they still fix em]. I don't think # 1 inj. is giving a bad signal since I adjuster the IP and the smoke is gone as well as running much better,. I did put the pulse pickup on #3 with no improved reading.This is a PITA but I am determined to figure it out.For those of you that have used a J33300 were you readings steady?

The Ferret arrived yesterday, so I hooked it up and checked my timing where I had left off with the Kent Moore. It was at 9.5 BTDC. The timing lite was consistant this time with the Ferret,so maybe the pulse pickup could be the culprit with the KM. I think I will contact them about repairing it. The Ferret gets the job done and it sure does'nt take up much room in the tool box.

Just make sure it's been descented otherwise the truck is gonna stink.

That is hilarious beyond belief!!!!!!!! I can just see that one. Can it run that fast?

Kinda like when I bring a computer into the house to work on, they all get a through "cat scan" before any work can be done.........

My Kent Moore requires the line in the dampner be really clean and the wheel clean also. The magnetic pickup needs to be clean and about 1/32 inch from the wheel. This may take some adjusting when the motor is running. The hard line must have all the paint removed from the contact area. I use scotchbrite to clean the line. Any kitchen sponge will work that has the scotchbrite side on it. Make sure you press the lower right rocker switch after all the leads are connected. Then all the displays will read all zeros. Now start the motor and bring up the rpm to 2000... Thats about all there is to it. Hope this helps out.

icanfixall,I took a folded piece of emery paper to the timing groove in the dampner and even painted the rest of it to help the mag pickup distinguish it.The inj. line is bare and clean where I hook up the pulse probe. I pushed the mag probe all the way in the cleaned tube on the timing tab. It does'nt contact the rotating dampner,so I wonder if the tube opening is smaller at the bottom to keep from making contact? It would'nt take long to tear up the end of it if it did.

kool55- You want to area of the dampner which you can see through the port which you insert the magnetic probe be clean and "Free" of paint not just the groove. Therefore you create a clean band on the dampner (about 1/2" wide) in the area closest to the engine. I had a similar problem when I tried using my Alltest meter and doing that got me a consistant RPM reading. Hope this helps

The tall tube you place the magnetic pickup must be clean of all the paint and the oily crap that gets caught up in it. I think Mell posted once it takes a 5/16 inch drill bit to clean it out properly. Try using that size bit but only use it with your hand. Don't use a drill motor. Hope this helps. Could be dirt in the bottom of the hole.

I did the 5/16 drill bit and a Qtip with parts cleaner. I will try wolf5842's idea and see what that does.
