Just ripped a hole in my down pipe .Who's fault ?

I have never had an issue like this before. I don't know whether it's my fault or if the exhaust was installed too rigid. It looks to me like the shop installed the exhaust too tight which caused it to rip the mounting tab right off. I wasn't four wheeling or anything, I was just turning around and had to go over a small bump.

I'm hoping it didn't damage the turbo at all. I'll have to check later tonight.

Just a bad welding job, looks like it's just globbed on. Looking at it again, it does have a little stress on it.

The exhaust shop didn't weld that tab on, it's an ATS down pipe and it comes with that tab already on it. So it would be a bad weld from ATS. It looks a lot better in person though.

Why wasn't it on a flex strap?

I think that tab is suppose to be mounted that way to keep the down pipe snug in the housing, it's a slip joint. But I was under the truck soon after having the work done and I remember thinking it was mounted super stiff with zero movement in the whole system.

Theres a reason that broke. Really should not be any stress there because the pipe is attached to the engine. Something had to move to cause that to snap like that. If it were me I would have a patch installed there and the weld that strap to the patch. I bet the pipe wont be moving again. It may have been too tight from the get go and finally "moved" enough to break it. Thats a fine weld because it broke the parent metal and the weld did not break.

That's what I'm thinking Gary. So is this on me or should I ask the shop to cover the repair?

I would ask the shop to fix it, most shops I deal with would do it just to keep you happy.

They likely wont because they didnt build the pipe. But ask nice for help and maybe??

That tab is a bad design. Mine popped the bolt out of it a few years ago, I just run it without it now.

I really can't say who is responsible for this. Really a 50% chance its both of your issues. Like russ posted. Go in asking nicely for help and ask what they will charge you. If your not happy with the fee ask for them to meet you half way with it. Negotiations are key in this situation..

Even though it's slip fit, I would think you could still use some sort of isolator.

Did they install the DP? If not and just added an exhaust system to the DP then I'd say it was whom ever mounted DP. I'd use a good rubber exhaust mount even two together to hold the DP up instead of a solid mount.

I'd ask them to repair and add the rubber instead of a steel mount from DP to exh manifold.
