The owners manual says to jump from the passenger side.
That's correct. The diameter of the cable increases at the passenger side battery to flow twice the amps from both batteries. The cable from the drivers side to the passenger side is sized to flow the current of ONE battery. Always jump from the passenger side. Yes you can do it from the drivers side with no ill effects, (doubtfull that your jumper cables can flow all 800 amps or whatever you have in your outboard source) but more power will be available if you do it correctly.
