A V8 was needed, and it had different axle choices. After the superduty was introduced, you could still get one of these "heavy f-150s" but not badged as a F-250 anymore. If you look close sometime, you will notice that in addition to the seven lug wheels, after 99 it has F-150 badges on the side, and on the tailgate it says "F-150, 7700" for the higher GVWR.
There are actually a bunch of these "5/8" ton trucks runnin around, you just don't really notice. I'll post some pics tonight.

rip van sparky said:I was at Lowes the other day and saw a newer (at least 2000) F-250 SD with 7 lug wheel covers, I had to look again cause I couldn't believe that Ford would do away with 8 lugs. I then looked at a F-350 SD in the lot and it still had 8 lugs. Whew!
