Ahh, the ole LightDuty F-250. In the 97-98 gap before the superduty, Ford took the new style F-150, gave it a beefer suspension, 7 lug wheels, and a higher GVWR. A V8 was needed, and it had different axle choices. After the superduty was introduced, you could still get one of these "heavy f-150s" but not badged as a F-250 anymore. If you look close sometime, you will notice that in addition to the seven lug wheels, after 99 it has F-150 badges on the side, and on the tailgate it says "F-150, 7700" for the higher GVWR.

There are actually a bunch of these "5/8" ton trucks runnin around, you just don't really notice. I'll post some pics tonight.

GO AIR FORCE ROTC! I'm an ROTC result myself... O/L 432A, University of South Alabama... Class of '97.

I nearly bought an F-150/7700 several years ago... my negotiations with the salesman were what led me to consider a diesel instead.

I think I gave up on the F-150 and started looking at diesels when the quote got up to $27,900. At the time, I could get a loaded XLT, crewcab, dually, 7.3L diesel for $33k.

I'm pretty sure I remember that they had a "light duty" F250 even before that. Back in the old "F150, 250 and 350 looked the same days". But since the light duty 250 and "heavy duty" 250 looked darned near the same, it didn't strike you as odd to see a LD 250.

I have only seen one 97/98 LD 250 in years of looking!

Those were made for the girls that could handle a real truck but thought they needed a 3/4 ton. A guy I used to work with had a 97 2wd F-250 like that, he used to say it was a strong as my 93 dodge 3/4 ton, I proved him wrong when I put 4,000 lbs of dirt in the back of mine and it wasn't even on the overloads. That did make it ride better though! :Sly

I was at Lowes the other day and saw a newer (at least 2000) F-250 SD with 7 lug wheel covers, I had to look again cause I couldn't believe that Ford would do away with 8 lugs. I then looked at a F-350 SD in the lot and it still had 8 lugs. Whew!

I see 7700s fairly regularly, generally as construction or contractor's trucks. I saw one 250LD with a manual tranny---that surprised me, since I thought they all had sluespumps.

A lot of the Super Dutys have 7 lug wheel covers, but they are actually 8 lug wheels under the covers. I think the only ones that really have 7 lug wheels are the LD 250s and whatever they call the heavy 150 that took its place.

I used to want one of the F-250's when I bought my pickup in 98, but I settled on the 150 with the 5.4...I loved that truck!!
