Intercooler

I'm sure this has come up before, but I cannot find exactly what I am after so I will ask. I'm looking at putting a intercooler on my truck. I know to look for the aluminum side housings. The one I'm looking at is off a 2001 truck. Is this a ok year to use? Thanks.

You dont have to have one with aluminum sides, I think they are just perferable. The intercooler your looking at should be ok .

IIRC an intercooler with aluminum side housings is mostly coveted by the PSD crowd because it can run safely at higher pressures. Based on this, IMHO the plastic side housing intercoolers are perfectly fine for our trucks...since they're meant to handle considerably more pressure than most of our trucks put out.

I believe that the '99-'03 7.3l intercoolers are the best fit on our trucks, but an intercooler from a '03-'07 6.0l should work as well. I certainly hope so; I have an '05 6.0l IC waiting to go into my truck

Either will work, as I have had both on my truck, the aluminum one is nice because you can shorten it to allow for better air flow over the ac and rad when pulling heavy loads.
The connections are a little different height wise but not more that an inch or so.

i can get a 6.0 intercooler and pipes for $100 is that a good deal or should i go lower

A 6.0 intercooler might be near overkill for these motors. I believe Russ is running one, and has had cooling issues.

one of the improvements I need to make on my IC setup is either addition of fans on the ac condenser or relocating the condenser in front of the intercooler. The AC was converted to R134 and it needs all the help it can get when outside temps get above 105deg. My system vented in the Barstow, CA heat one time on my way home to TX it made for a very uncomfortable trip.

Towcat why did you switch to R134? I know that R12 is still available (straight from Ford even) and is allot colder than the R134.

that was what was in the truck when I got it. I just didn't bother converting it back over.

I took it off and am running a cut down 99 IC. BUT I discovered that my new fan clutch doesnt work till its way hot ,so I am modding it to come on sooner.

Hey TOWCAT, Russ told me about an improved condenser for our trucks from NAPA... it might help your issue????

So a cooler like this one off ebay will work... I see the tubes face back towards the condenser and radiator, and dont know if they will clear the sides??? Does the newer power strokes, say 94-99, run a similar radiator size/width as we do???

Yikes! $100 + $135 shipping! Keep looking, there are better deals out there.

I agree. Keep looking. If my deal go's through then I will be getting a intercooler out of a 2001 truck with the piping for $100.
