I haven't had a working truck in two months. The transmission place finally got the transmission right. But my truck has a very weird problem. If I ever put transmission fluid in the tube and miss a little bit, it will drip down on the starter solenoid. And for some reason whenever this happens, the truck will just click when you try to start it. Has anybody else ever had this problem or have any idea why it would do this? This has happened a couple times, and every time I have just cleaned it off and blown it with compressed air and it will start. But this time it won't. What is the problem? Is my started solenoid bad? I tried jumping it straight to the solenoid and it still just clicked, so I believe it is the solenoid. I am gonna be gone camping in Turkey Run all weekend so I wont be posting back til Monday. But please tell me how to fix this problem, I have to get it out of this guys lot and back home. And yes I have cleaned the connections on the solenoid to the point where they shine like new.

i hear that the starter on there idi's are incredibly sensitive to fluid/moisture but like previously posted could have a lose connection and blowing it off with compressed air could have made it lost connection that seems unlikely though other wise does the starter spin the motor over quickly

There is a crapload of amperage going through those connections. If they are the slightest bit loose they will burn out, perhaps internally where you can't see it. I went through 3 starters last year before I figured out that there is no such thing as too-tight on those posts. A healthy coat of Noalox and grunt-tight connections and I've made it 14 months on the current starter. Thank god for O'Reilly's lifetime warranty, I only had to pay for the first one!

I doubt the trans fluid has caused the problem, but may be pointing it out every time you spill. The good news is that you don't have to pull the entire starter to replace the solenoid. Your problem sounds like the one that brought my truck back to me after being stolen. A click only when trying to start is most likely the solenoid, and they are not expensive (about $14-$20). Don't tighten down the battery cable too much or you will crack the phenolic cap, but remember to use split lock washers under the nuts. They do, in fact, work to keep things tight.

After reading of all the starter troubles that everyone else has, I guess the old starter on my old 6.9 is unique.
In over half-a-million miles, I never saw the thing until I pulled the engine.
Many times I have cranked it until it smoked.
In all those years and miles, I never touched a screw on it.
It has been sitting un-used ever since the engine swap and I bet it would whirl the engine over as soon as the cables were connected.

check the short wire from the solenoid on the starter to the starter mine works loose every once in a while and man it ticks me off.

Will this little wire cause other gremlins? On my 96 it clicks and clicks, but 3rd or 4th time and it will bust right off and run. Runs funny though, cuts out and stalls. As it is doing this the amp gauge will drop to 8 and then work its way back up to the halfway point. Runs fine for a bit then starts to fall again. Cutting out and stalling and the amp gauge goes to 8 again. Is that symptomatic of this little wire also?????
