ignition lock cylinder replacement

I am looking at rock auto as a reference, they list 5 different motorcraft part numbers and describe them as "Number 4 Cut Letter D" or "Number 1 Cut Letter A" or similar. anyone know how this works? is this a vin digit?

I didn't know there were differences, I just grabbed one from orielly's and it worked.

i know that i can just pop a replacement in, i am curious though if these labels specify a key/lock that would match what i have... IE would match the doors
