You don't need anything burnt or broken to have it try to go to a gear and not connect. Lack of engagement pressure in that gear will do it. Maybe just an O ring. Soft parts don't last forever.

i ran back and forth from lima ohio to quakertown pa (9.5 hr drive) many times with my old 83. 4.10 gears with 35's and a 4 speed. 3000 rpm cruising at 70-75 mph. averaged 16-18 mpg. i would rather have a cast iron 4 speed over a zf5 if you are going to work the truck hard.
and as also posted above, they can run ALL DAY against the high speed gov(normally around 3600) and have no issues, as long as its under a load. free reving it to 3600 and holding it there will hurt them, but not driving them. you guys that are worried about it never drove a f superduty with 215/35 tires and 5.13 gears.....

to the OP, only part you wont be able to use from the 87 is the clutch pedal assy. but everything else will practically bolt right in.

yes you will need a pedal assy from a 92-97 truck. ford does still offer these new. well atleast they did a few years ago.
