Hi I'm new to the forum.
I have a 1993 f350 idi single cab with a E40d. Recently it will not shift into 3rd from 2nd its just revs.
I have two options I'm wondering what would be best.
1. I have a 1987 f350 dump truck with a 4 speed Manuel with 100k miles I was thinking of switching my E40d out for the 4speed I'm not sure how big of a job this?
2. I could buy a E40d for 200 bucks from a guy on Craigslist whom says it's from a totaled 7.3 with 70k miles on it and have blind faith it will work I figured a Clutch kit would be around 400 bucks if I did the Manuel swap

You could have an electrical problem. Sounds like your in so called limp mode.
Check these, VSS on the rear axle, Tach sensor on the IP gear housing, FIPL/TPS on the IP. Dirty or corroded connectors. E4OD harness connection on the pass side,

Is your Speedometer and Tach working

My tack and speedometer are working.
Before it broke completely it kinda thumped into third from second all the other gears seemed fine. My tranny fluid is still pink I would think it would be dirty if second gear was burnt up? I can shift from drive into 2nd and move it wouldn't that be the same gear?

I would not get a 4 Spd tranny. You need a 5 or 6 Spd to get OD. You don't want to go screaming down the freeway and wasting fuel.

What top speed will I get on the highway with a 4 speed. I don't drive on the highway very often anyways. I'll try to check the things on the E40d that where suggested.

Depends on gears and tyre siz3...without knowing those 2 things...how long is a piece of string?

Could be something really simple. Check out this video:

Crappy sound, but at about 9:30 he finds the problem.

From what I've seen, if you have 4.10 gears, you'll top out at 65 to 70. You may go a little faster since it looks like you have larger tires than the 235/85r16's that it probably came with. I could be wrong, but that's what I remember from test driving a lot of these trucks after installing a remanned engine. I quit that job almost 16 years ago, so I may not recall quite right.

Yeah the gearing is 4.10 with 35s
Is there anyone in this forum that's done this swap? What do I have to do with the steering colum im sure there's sensors in it so you cant start when it's in drive etc.

I'm gonna drop the transmission pan tomorrow see if it's full of junk, if it's not I'll start chasing a electrical issue.

There's a neutral safety switch on the side of the transmission that won't let it start in gear. I know some of the older cars and trucks will start in both park and neutral. I'm not sure if yours will or just in park. The manual transmissions use a "clutch safety switch" that's located on the clutch pedal. I went from a 4 speed to a ZF5 in my first 1985 F250. I can't remember why for sure, but I just bypassed the clutch switch. I found the one wire that got "hot" when I turned the key to 'Start". I spliced a wire onto that before the clutch switch and ran it out to the starter solenoid on the fender. Looking back, I'm not sure why I didn't just splice into the wire coming out of the clutch switch.

I swapped my '85 F250 from the automatic to a 4 speed several years ago. The shifter in the truck from the old trans is left in park forever, so the truck will start anytime. It's helpful to be able to start the truck in gear in case of the clutch line melting or failed master or slave you would still be able to get home. I did not setup a clutch pedal sensor but I'm the only one that drives it. I have 3.73 axles in my truck and I only had the 4 speed for 6 months before swapping again to a ZF5. The ratios were terrible in the T19, 65mph max and if 4th is too tall when hauling a trailer 3rd would only do low 40's so you were the slowest truck up the hill. Even though you had plenty of power you were out of rpm and couldn't upshift and pull 4th till it leveled out. The worst part was installing the pedal assembly, I remember it was a tough job. Overall it should take you the weekend if you have all the parts.

Thanks For the help guys I learned a lot already from ya. I drove the truck today shifted fine.... it went into the gears a little hard so I'm guessing I'm chasing a electrical issue or something is sticking? I'll check the fluid in my t case. I think I'm gonna find zf5 as recommended if I find this one to be expensive to repair

4 speed will work perfectly fine for what you have, even better if you do plow with it since i see the frame. what you did not mention is if the dump truck was 4x4.

with your gearing and tire size, with a 4 speed manual your top speed will be around 90. not 65 like posted above.
