IDI and the meanings of life....

I read the Article posted about IDI but I dont fully understand it. Is there any benefit to having a precombustion chamber? How big is it, How does it work?

If anyone has pictures of it and other 6.9 internals I would like to see. Please Post.

Nice pictures from TYP4!!! That cutaway is great. Those cups are a strange design... Only half hangs over the cylinder huh? Why?

You need a lot of swirl to get the fuel to burn good. That's why computers make direct injection possible. They can break a single injection event into multiple events which keeps the burn clean.

The swirl is done by piston and valve design, You don't need a computer to do a direct injection. There is so much that determines clean burn it would take a page to explain............

yeah sorry mel, my old ford tractor and international forklift do not have computers and they run fine.

Yea. My point exactly. They are not over the road vehicles, and have different emissions requirements.

Yeah, what about the pre computer DI turbo Cummins motors. On the other hand, Mel makes a good point, all the old diesels, IDI and DI were smoky and put out more NOx and SOx. He's right about the precups, they are designed to help the fuel start to burn before it hits the cylinders, and consequently less smoke.
