I managed to do this around 6pm today.....Biggin and I got everything yanked out other than the transmission itself. I needed to take a break from this. It's just been a really really bad day. I'll have the welding class at school weld it up for me this week.....

The bellhousing.....the little bubbled out lookin part that protects the nose cone of the starter.

Was your starter loose, or did you have a flywheel/clutch come apart? I'm sure it can be welded, but if you're going through all the work to R&R the trans I might consider putting in another bellhousing.

Good luck to you, that's a strange fracture for sure.

it is a zf 5 , he would have to change the front half of the case , which are really hard to find. i already considered it but can't locate one.

If thats an aluminum case thats cracked then it can be welded but... Someone better really know how to do it. Not a job for someone that has little experiance in doing this. The preheat is very important. To heat it up properly use an oxy actylene torsh cutting head. Apply heat till the soot is blown off by the heat. Then TIG WELD... Do not try to mig weld this. If this is cast iron forget it and buy a replacement part... Hopefully you can get something useful from what I have posted. Welding aluminum is a tuff job if you have no experiance doing it.

I'm not sure if I even see the crack, all I see is a big gap, is that what you're trying to take a picture of?

Yea, that's pictures of the gap caused by the break. Gary, the welding instructor is the one that's going to weld this up for me most likely so no worries. And yes, it is aluminum.

looks like the SAE adapter bought the farm.
you will have to pull the trans to change it out.
I have a few of them on hand.

The short response to this is yes, cast iron can actually be welded. But there are few welders suited to do so and they mostly work on railroad diesel heads. Why do I know this? Because my business is 95% cast iron, and I used to get it welded from time to time. It is expensive, time consuming and you need to not only remachine the part, you have to deal with probable warpage. The parts are heated to cherry red (about 2000 degrees F) in order to lay a bead, and there is still a high incidence of holes and hard spots.

Way easier just to get another part.

Using nickle rod is not welding iron, it is brazing.

About to say,. I have a bunch of electrodes just for cast iron. heavy Aluminum isn't that bad with a mig either with a hot enough machine.

Nope, not the adapter towcat, it's the bellhousing up and over the top from what I can feel. Will have it out completely in a few...waiting on another set of hands since I'm not comfortable snatching it out with a regular old floorjack.

If it can't be welded I have a 4X4 ZF case in the barn. It's in need of some cleaning but it's not broken to my knowledge. Used it and another to make one working unit out of two. One trans had forward gears the other had reverse only combine the two and make one but kept the other case if I ever needed it.
