I hate drum brakes!!

I replaced everything when I got my truck except the front rotors but every other brake related item was new in February. I did the hydro boost swap and the sd master also. every so often my rear brakes hang up I smell it when I get out of the truck. take the drums off check them out nothing out of place all looks good loosen them up and they will be good again. What causes this? I have had other IDI fords that had zero rear brake problems.

I am going to have my cousin take a look at them over the weekend to check them out for me.

But in general I just hate drum brakes!!

Is the RABS unit still in the system? Could be starting to act up. when did the hang up problem start, after the hydro boost converion? If so the RABS unit may not be compatable with the added brake presure.

The self adjusters in the back drum brakes are side specific. That means there is a left and right side adjuster. Might be someone mixed them up so now they adjust up all the time till they burn into the drums. Others will chime in with more information on this.

rabs was replaced along with everything else. i also had the parts store mark what side the adjusters went to on the box so they should be corect.

i bought the truck not running and when we pulled it onto the trailer a brake line blew so i replaced everything befor i drove it including the hydro conversion.

Did you change the rear soft line from the frame to the axel? They can separate internally and cause the brakes not to release all the way

Changed that also.

Put in new, drums, shoes, parking brake cables all 3, springs, adjusters, wheel cylinders, rubber line to rear axle, all stainless steel brake line front to back, rabs valve, front rubber lines, calipers, I used the hydro unit and master from my fsuperduty I scrapped out they were good working units when I pulled them. The only thing I reused was the front rotors and pads. I wanted to be able to bleed the system with out any problems so everything with a bleeder got replaced.

Brakes were good for about 3000 miles then the LR hung up so I loosened them. at around 5000 miles the RR hung up loosened that side. I thought it was something with the parking brake so I stopped using it completely to see what would happen. Today I drove 20 miles to my dads house picked up his skid loader and trailer pulled it about 10 miles when I got to my destination the LR were smoking hot!! I down shift and engine brake as much as possible.

If I could afford it I would just do a disk brake conversion in the back!

Take the self adjusters off. Don't trust an auto parts guy to get things right. Adjusters should only work backing up, then you have to make a hard stop in reverse to actuate them.

I know you had the parts house mark the self adjusters for location, but they could still be installed incorrectly. Left side is drivers side, and the star wheel needs to be torwards the rear shoe or rear of the truck and the right side is the pass. side and the same for the star wheel, torwards the rear shoe or rear of truck. After everything you have replaced this is what I would look at.

what side dose the one with normal threads go on? I think one is normal and one is left hand or backwards thread.

Correct me if Im wrong, but I think if the adjusters are in the opposite way, the brakes will adjust DOWN instead of up.

Have you checked out your bearings? You didn't say you replaced them so I had to ask. It seems simplistic but that was the cause of my rear brake issues last year. I replaced everything too, not hydroboosted but still...I thought they were OK and hubs had very little wobble or play but when disassembled...tink tink tink little rollers going everywhere. Inner races had to be cut off. But they had been quiet, no squeaks or squeals.

Since everything is new could the mastercylinder from a truck that didnt use drum brakes be causing a problem? Rear disc brakes use more flid that the drums maybe that is affecting it somehow. Just a thought...
