Hypothetical Question?

Lets say you're away from home, turn the key to start your truck, and inside the steering column the 'actuator' breaks > how do you then start your truck?

Jumper wire from the + battery to the IP Fuel shut-off solenoid...then what's need to get it running?

As long as you are under the hood, use a screw driver to jump the small and large posts on the starter switch mounted on the inner fender. You are good to go.

You could also go under the steering column and activate the starter switch by hand, but that requires some gymnastics.

Its easy enoguh to take the bolts out and drop the column, then you can get to the switch. Did it break on you again Ray?
But in a quick emergency, its like knuckledragger says.

No sir, but even though I replaced the oe actuator 4 years ago, and I just purchased a spare actuator (not like I can R&R it away from home) every time I go to start my truck (sever cold temps this winter) I clinch my butt cheeks lol
Luckily, the oe actuator broke in my driveway.

I wasn't sure 'if' the key still also needed to be in the 'run position' and being a busted actuator would prevent that or make a difference???

Seems like a somewhat hidden 'optional' push-button start and for the heck of it, an on/off toggle to disable the GP system during hot-starts would be a nice addition to these rigs.

Don't know about the diesels with this issue, only one of my IDI's has tilt and its parked getting some repairs before driving. But on my fiancé's 87 F150 the actuator went right after the snow started falling, turning the ignition to on or run whatever you want to call it unlocks the steering wheel and puts power to components needed to run, the actuator just runs the starter solinoid so a screw driver to jump terminals on solinoid will get you home. Didn't have time to fix the steering column so she started her truck like that for two weeks before a connecting rod decided to go. Still got to fix that one have been debating on a push button added to run the starter to eliminate this from happening again.

the plastic cup at the base of the column where it meets the dash needs to come off, then you can grab the rod leading down to the ignition switch and push it forward, 1 click is acc, 2nd is run, push further and you actuate the the starter, needlenose would be neccesarry to push hard enough to get it to start. I ran my truck like that for a few years. I have a pushbutton for the starter, pushbutton for manual glow plugs, a relay for turning off gps when engine is warm, both of the pushbuttons are just backups
