Does anyone have a hypermax turbo? My brother has a 92-93 w a hypermax turbo on it an where the DP goes into the turbo, there is a exhaust clam and some heavy mechanics wire wrapped around the turbo holding it in the turbo.

He ordered the "kit" from hypermax to reseal and hold the DP into the turbo. It came with what looks likes a ring(for a piston) and a spring loaded snap ring.

i pulled the mechanics wire and exhauast clamp off the turbo and the DP fell out of the turbo. I can see where the "ring" goes into a slot on the DP. But where does the spring loaded snap ring go? and hom does it Stay into the turbo?

Also i am having one hell of a time getiing the old "ring" out of the DP. Any suggestions? The hypermax directions metions NOTHING about the ring or snap ring to seal the DP to the turbo

Thanks, Brad

Down pipe is held in place by a couple of bolts through a tab on the pipe to the mounting plate for the turbo. sounds like they are either missing or the tab is broken. The piston ring deal is all you get to seal the downpipe to the turbo with. Mine got installed with a light coating of muffler cement before being bolted into place. Never showed any signs of leakage till I took the bolts out and moved it around to address a leak on the trans.

Hypermax instructions are either meaningless or too technical, keep talking with Brimmstone or Agnem or others who have worked on the Hypermax turbos or give their tech support a call. They have a good reputation for spending lots of time with customers and answering technical questions in detail. Seems like kind of an oddball design from what I have read here. I must admit I'm going on secondhand info and haven't worked on or owned one which is why I say talk to hypermax or people here who own them. Good luck.

There is no spot for bolts(rusted off?). There is just a cast flange on the top of the DP that goes into the turbo. and that flange has a groove for a "ring" to seal it. Hypermax sent the "ring" and for better lack of terms "spring loaded snap ring" I can see the "ring" goes into the cast but does that snap ring go underneith it? I have a pic on my camera I will have to down load on here.

i was also wondering what actually holds the DP into the turbo.

Any pics of the DP and turbo area?

The mounting tab is down low on the pipe. It might be able to rust off but there would be marks where it went. Tried pulling up there site to look again but it wouldn't come up for some reason.

Yeah. IIRC there was some sort of piece of metal down below the hard bend. I thought it was a tag spot welded to the pipe like ****** headers uses:dunno

Well my brother ended up ordering a new DP from hypermax. The top half(what goes into the turbo) was $148 and the lower half was $58?

Sounds about right on the price. You'll be in for some fun getting the downpipe remove then put back into place. I pulled the turbo on the one I was working on because it gave me so much trouble.

Torch or sawzall will cut the old one out in no time

I could get you some pics if it would help. It's a very difficult thing to photograph with the engine in the truck. The prices on the pipes sound right. Hypermax is very proud of everything they make. :hail

Thanks Mel. but i think it should be pretty straight forward once we get the old Dp out. We were going to try and save the lower half, but for $58, screw it, it will get a new one. They wanted to sell my brother new Up-pipes, but his are still good, so no need for them.

I just cant wait to get this truck on the road and see what she will do

Better late than never???

Here's a picture that might help. The bolts that hold the dp in place are on the back side of the passenger side head. That, and the rest of the exhaust system are all that hold the dp in the turbo...
