I read the FAQ and it mentions the average idi non turbo numbers are 128.3HP and 241.55T if I understand it right. This is at the rear wheel. I am shopping for another work truck and have been considering the Isuzu cabovers. Their torque numbers seem to run higher than the idi. Is their numbers taken from another location in the driveline and if so what should I add to the idi to get the number fair for comparison? Thanks in advance

The Isuzu is probly a much newer engine and turbo charged. IIRC my 6.9 is rated @ 158hp and 300ish tq. Some 6.9's were more like 180hp.

158 hp sounds like the high altitude version, I think the most common setting is 165 hp. 7.3 was 175 hp IIRC, maybe 180 for later ones. Don't think I've seen an official spec for torque, but the Banks turbo literature gives ~300 for the 6.9 & 320 for the 7.3.

Pretty much every car/truck engine is going to give a flywheel horsepower rating, so compare to ~175/325 (hp/tq) for the stock idi. Aftermarket turbo bumps that up to around 225/400.

That being said, also note that medium duty engine specs are set a bit lower than light duty typically, since they're designed to run at that power output continually. The 7.3 idi is rated something like 150 hp @ 3000 rpm for the IH medium duty trucks for example. (somewhere I have an IH specsheet but can't find it)

I appreciate the answers. I am trying to get an idea how the Isuzu would occasionally tow around 10,000#. With a 4.555 rear end and the same size tires, I'm guessing just a little better than the idi. Time for the idi to become more of a rolling toolbox. It's not being put out to pasture by any means, I like the old truck too much.
