Hey all,
I hooked up with a guy (not that kind of hook up) tonight who has a buddy who has a Banks turbo. He pulled it off of his pre '92 7.3 for some reason (something about worried about the non-stock turbo on a stock engine). Both guys have IDIs. We went to look at it and I don't know sh*t from shinola wrt to turbos as my IDI is my first Ford diesel and I've never owned a turbo anything. It's a Banks setup, looks like a lot of, if not all of the parts are there. I saw the downpipe (forklift driven over look), the intake/filter box (it's square, maybe rectangular). Couple or three hoses. Like I said, I've never fiddled with turbo stuff so I'm not sure it's all there.

I looked at Banks' site to try to download the destructions for installing this kit. Couldn't find it. Does anybody here have a parts diagram for this vintage of a Banks turbo? I'd like to see how complete it is so I know how much I'll be into it for.

I kind of pulled/pushed the turbo wheel and there was a bit of movement up & down, like the shaft needed a bushing, it didn't move side to side at all. I have Oregon Fuel Injection in town and have read that the actual turbo rebuild is fairly inexpensive (didn't Darrin just get Big Ed's done for $100 ish?).

Sorry about the length of this post, wanted to try to get as much info out there as possible right off the bat. Looks like maybe just a trade out of some brake work & parts for the turbo & he offered to let us do it there at his place (with multiple welders, need to get in with him for sure!). I heard a $300 number thrown out at some point too, we'll see. I want to see how much other stuff I'll be into this for before pulling the trigger.

Thanks in advance,
Mike

Well if you can get the kit fairly cheap an overhaul will not kill all your savings. It really depends on what has to be done...turbo kit(seals bearings) its pretty cheap...new compressor wheel...more money...worst case scenario is you need a new wheel AND compressor housing, but there is a good chance with what you described it might be fine now. You might call Banks and if you get a good tech support person you might get some help..but anyway Darrin knows about Banks non gated turbo as thats what this one is.

That brings up a good question or two also. How do we identify a gated or non gated turbo from Banks?

Let us know how Oregon Fuel Injection stuff goes if you go there. I just found them on-line a few hours ago.

300 and most or all of it is there? HECK YES! I may be wrong but I think the side to side is the big worry on a turbo.

Keep us posted,

You can tell the difference if you look at the air filter assembly. The nongated version had a square/rectangular box, the wastegated version has a cyndrical shaped box.

This may sound stupid, but why not just look at the turbo to see if it has a wastegate actuator on it?:dunno

It looks similar to a vacuum advance module on a distributor, but bigger. It's connected to an arm on the turbo via a threaded rod.
