If you get black smoke on a hard pull, and EGT goes up to about 1100 fairly quickly on a hill, the pump has been tweaked. Light smoke and low EGTs, it might be set low (the Banks "emissions legal" setting) or still at NA trim. Adjusting the pump was part of the installation process and outlined in the instructions. You're sure it's wastegated? From your initial post the boost performance sounds more typical of a non-wastegated. The Sidewinder came both ways early on, later only as wastegated. IMO all that's needed is a 3-inch system, which is what Banks supplied. That's what my Banks equipped truck had most of it's life and when I installed a 4-inch system, no noticeable difference in performance. A 3-inch system is cheap to do. Four inches is getting there. You won't find much of anything ready made. It will be custom or adapted. Banks still has some of the systems available but... yowza! the cost. 10-15 psi is normal boost (generally at the lower end) and all the engine can stand. Mine has seen 14 psi a few times. I wouldn't sweat the number. If you can get the pump to supply the appropriate amount of fuel for that amount of air, the engine will be delivering about all it can practically do without other mods. Other mods? ... head studs. High boost and fuel rates = blown head gaskets. You'll hear about the Moose pumps and they are one of the better performance investments behind a turbo... but I'd put head studs ahead of that for durability's sake.

Just a few weeks ago I had my boost gauge (0-15psi) pegged out for over 3 minutes pulling one grade. No coolant lost! LOL

My guess is I was somewhere around 20psi, judging by how long it took to unpeg after letting off (it doesnt take long at all, but a little longer than if it was right at 15psi).

Welcome to the forum...

As mentioned check out FAQ, and TECH sections...it's not TECH 101 as previously mentioned...TECH 101 are my own threads on how to's LOL funny, I have my own section now....but I digress...also so you keep hard earned $$ in your pocket away from theives...I STRONGLY suggest the HALL OF SHAME section so you don't spend money foolishly

Now as for this SBC car...we want VIDEO of that bad boy ....oh ya baby! LOL

If you are serious about a bit more Oomph, consider a cam from Russ, known as Typ4 here and a new IP and Moose Mister injectors from Mel at Conestoga Diesel known here as Agnem.

Mel sells an upgraded IP capable of some good power, and injectors as well. Russ has a nice cam. Studs are recommended and should be used for hi boost engines.

It's easy to get outside the map of that turbo as it's not as refined as what's available today.

Lots of threads here on all kinds of setups and I would suggest that SEARCH become your new best friend.

Sounds to me like a you have a 6.9 to confirm take a 12pt socket and see what size fits the head bolts if it's a 6.9 it's 7/16" and a 7.3 is 1/2"

If you want to go quite wild there are parts available and custom IP's Justin at R&D Performance have them.

So read lots and lots, post some video of that car, also pics of your truck

Welcome to OB

Al

Just send a pm to that guy who posted right above you. Typ4

He's the cam guy, and an all around really good guy to deal with on a lot of things.

Russ who goes by typ4 here is the person to get the torquer cam from. They are very inexpensive too. Its a very nice low end cam designed for the idi logging industry some years back. Works great on the na or the turbo engines just fine. If I was not so lazy I would have one in my truck now. But alass. I can't even spare the time to install my hypermax intercooler. Need some intake hat modification to make it work on the Banks wastegated sidewinder turbo. At one time I had 2 of the same intercoolers but still no time for install. I'm a waste looking for a place to bee all I can be...:angel:

A couple of questions that could help us is:
What $$ range are you looking at spending on the truck?

How much wrenching do you want to do?

If your answers to these are "Not too much" then this is what I would suggest......If the IP has around 100K miles on it, then replace it along with new injectors. Time it correctly. Good builders on the forum will build you a pump that it already tuned for a turbo. For the exhaust you could go with 4". If you don't mind pulling the heads and installing studs you could turn the boost up a bit. If you don't want to then I would keep it where it is until you see what you run loaded.

If you don't mind spending a little more $$$ and time you can invest in a cam. You could swap turbo's, or put on an inter-cooler and turn yours up a ways....though it will loose efficiency.

If you want to go a little crazy with it, there are higher flow pumps that can provide you with the fuel you need when running a bigger turbo and high boost levels.

It's really about what you want out of it. For a reliable, simple tow vehicle I would go with the first option......just don't expect it to be to be something it isn't.

And where are the pics of this Drag Car?!?!?!
