I'm busier than a one arm paper hanger lately but really want to get this darn ATS turbo system off my pickup and the new system on. :sly I budgeted out about 5 hours next Saturday with no distractions etc.. to get this thing off. Think I'm giving myself enough time?

Plan of attack involves:

Remove:

Turbo
Up Pipe
Downpipe
Y Pipe
Airbox

Install:

N/A Y Pipe

Nurse pickup (i.e. drive easy) to the exhaust shop that will finish off the piping needs for the remote mount turbo.

Am I being realistic w/ 5 hours? I'm "hoping" I don't run into to many rusted up hardware parts considering all this stuff was just re-installed in Sept. 2011.

Took me about that long the first time removing the factory ATS system. Now I could do it in about 2 miserable hours.

On a side note, there is NO WAY that my turbo was going to come off of the exhaust pedestal in place. I really don't understand how anyone can get enough room to loosen up those nuts.

It takes a little maneuvering, but you can yank the whole assembly out. If you have to separate them, it will be a lot easier on a bench.

They will come off, but you will most likely be bleeding, and pissed enough to not care. I put my turbo on with the exhaust, and pedestal all ready installed. I now own a set of gear wrenches just in case I ever need to do that again.

I can do it in less than 2 on a stuck factory kit that fights back. But I've fmdone it several times. Its easiest to remove or at least unbolt the glow plug controller to use short wrenches on the back of the up pipe mount bolts. If I feel like making it really easy I disconnect the the cab mounts and jack the cab yo.

if any of the uppipe and pedestal mounts are balky, unbolt and lift the cab.
I fought with a seized uppipe for a week and then I unbolted the cab. out in under an hour.

You may also have success accessing the uppipe and pedestal by removing the transmission floorboard cover and gaining access from inside the cab. I would also suggest spraying penetrating lubricant on the nuts and bolts every chance you get up until the time for removal.

Penetrating lube is exactly what I was gonna mention. I swear by Pb Blaster. That stuff is amazing! Spray it on and let it sit over night and then give it another spray when you do it and get to work... It makes all the difference in the world on rusty old nuts...

5 hours is a good guess. A better allotment of time is a whole day. I hate the pedestal nuts, they are the biggest PITA I have ever encountered. Another half inch would have been gravy with that design ATS you frickin geniuses.

I was able to get em off with an older snap on 1/4 inch drive ratchet and shallow 9/16 socket with some ease.

Big fan of the jacking up the cab camp;Sweet First time Towcat told me to do that , it sounded like a pain, but it will save you all kinds of headaches. Jack that sucker up and set it on 6" blocks and you will have PLENTY of room to get your arm in behind there instead of beating yourself up. Depending on which ATS it is that you are trying to get off, you are still going to have a chore getting it out.

Hard but can be done

Took me about that long the first time removing the factory ATS system. Now I could do it in about 2 miserable hours.

I had to remove my turbo to install the ATS upgrade exhaust housing. The nuts on the pedestal are not that hard to get to, they are just extremely stuck and of course the hardest nut to get to is always stuck the worst. Use lots of penetrating fluid and it helps if you have small arms. I would start spraying down the nuts daily to help break them free. Also have a first aid kit available and I hope your neighbors are not very religious, since you will be screaming some very bad things.

You will need several different style wrenches, ie, gear, straight shaft, offset, and a S-wrench would help. Also, try and clean the threads before breaking the nuts loose.

Truck make it to the exhaust shop?

no thats next Saturday. Did a few odds and ends today, welded up some flanges & fittings, etc... I'm going to take a few days off this week and get the oil lines ran to this thing as well as install my electric fuel pump. then next Sat. I'll rip off the current turbo setup, drop it off at the exhaust shop. Headed to Vegas the following week so hopefully when I get back I'll come back to a "good to go" remote turbo system.

excuse my ignorance, still have alot to learn about the world of diesels, but what is the reason for running a remote turbo? is there an advantage to it?

Go to Sears and get the 3/8 drive flex head ratchet with the bent handle. There is enough room to get it under the 093 turbo and off of the pedestal. 1st timer, 5 hours should be plenty. do it a half dozen times, its a 35-45min job.
