Hi everyone,

I am working on my 1992 Ford F250 7.3L IDI. I am trying to complete an head gasket replacement and while gaining access to the passenger side head I have ran into a problem. My engine is equipped with an aftermarket 093 ATS turbo and 2 of the 4 mounting nuts attaching the “Y Collector” to the turbo are near impossible to gain access to.

Does anyone have any recommendations on how to remove them? I was only able to capture a photo of the outboard nut. The inboard nut it tucked under the turbo too far for my phone to get a photo. All the fasteners have been soaking in kroil overnight.

The outboard nut in the photos can be accessed with a stubby wrench but not a socket or angle wrench can fit. I have been trying to loosen that nut through hitting the stubby wrench with a hammer but haven’t been successful in loosing the nut.

The inboard nut can be accessed with a socket and ratchet but wont mate up very flush so whenever torque is applied it pops off.

None of the Hardware is stripped. And it maybe that I just need to keep trying but any help or recommendations would be appreciated.

It's been over 20 years since I've messed with one of these, but it seems like I used a stubby wrench on both of those nuts once I got them broken loose.

Crows foot might work. Or can you get to it from under the truck with long wobbly extension?

Ok so that is actually the plan tomorrow morning. I’ve got about 4 feet of extensions and I’m gonna try and use 2 universals to get the right angle.

Never done one, but If it were me, I'd try a 1/4 drive shallow chrome swivel socket with long extension from the bottom. Might not be strong enough, but it looks like it might fit. Penatrating oil first.

the best way to remove these are with the turbo off the truck.

unbolting the pedestal will also give you more room.

when i reinstall these, i use header bolts with a 7/16" head, and a ratchet wrench works perfect

Have you tried a manifold/curved box end wrench?

The turbo feed pipe on the ATS is supposed to split in the middle. Theoretically you pull the down pipe down and out of the way, then unbolt the two bolts holding the turbo drain/pedestal to the back of the manifold and presto, you lift the whole assembly up and out of the truck. If your feed pipe joint is seized then you resort to what you are attempting or find a way to heat the joint of the feed pipe with a rosebud and wiggle them apart.
