Not to be rude, but this kind of statement always blows me away when people are tight on cash. My brother even does it. He'll say he's completely broke and then go blow $50-$100 on beer/booze. I just don't get it...

I hear what you are saying, but I got all my priorities taken care of FIRST. Fridge is full of food, rent, lights and heat are all teken care of, both vehicles are insured, registered and licensed for the road, the wheel bearing is getting put on today (THAT should be a chore after last night...

).
Besides, we have a stash of $650 that is tucked away in an account. We forget we have this, and only add to it once or twice a month. It's there for when all hell breaks loose.
When I said $40 would break me, that mean that I would be spending my weekly coffee allowance on a bottle of rum (I said case of beer, but rum was on sale).
But I do see your point and I see it all the time!!
