holset turbo on an IDI?

ok, i was in the local diesel shop the other day for work and i was looking for a wastegate for a 6.5 diesel. well since this place had at least 30 turbos sitting there (not joking) i asked them about my old idi, i asked them if they had a kit or know if anyone had one for sale. he told me he had sold a kit a month ago and usually sells 1 kit a year for the idi. but he didnt have anything in stock right now. i asked if he had a turbo that would work, he goes in the back and brings me out a holset turbo. he said its off of a 5.9 and it will work without any problems if i can make it fit. i said i can make it fit and he says take it, and after you fab it up bring it back and he will rebuild it for me. he gave me the turbo, it even has an exhaust flange already on it. so question i have is, what do you guys think about this turbo on an idi? it looks big to me and i think it has the t3 flange. i will try and take a pic of it and put it on here

i dont think anyone has done it yet, here at least. now, most 5.9s build way more boost than any idi could handle, first gens. might be comparable. for the most part i think you will be blazing a new trail here.

Also what model of Holset turbo is it. If it is too big, it might not spool well enough for your motor since idis don't need as much boost but on the other hand our motor are bigger than a 5.9 and it might spool well but you might have to turn down the wastegate to regulate boost. Idk just my $.02.

You should be fine, your not gonna over boost it, the IP wont push that much fuel. That trubo should have a wastegate also.

Stock a first gen only makes 14-15 psi with the H1C and the non gated 18.5 and 21 cm exhaust housings, with the fuel cranked up, I'm pushing 33 out of mine, and soon to be more, as I finally have a 3200 rpm spring for it. They are NOT wastaged. Second and third gens are however.
Put the same turbo on a 6.9, and because the 6.9 demands more airflow, you will have less boost for the same volume flowed by the turbo.
I had come across a formula somewhere to roughly approximate A/R ratings to the CM2 ratings the Holsets carry, but, I neglected to save it. It would be interesting to try a H1C or the likes on a 6.9, they use a T3 flange, and the compressor is around the same size as what the IDI tubo kits use. IIRC the H1C from an IC first gen is a 54mm compressor. You might need to run one of the bigger exhaust housings that are found stock on the first gens, the Cummins guys feel the 18.5 is slow to spool, and the 21 is a lagmaster and general concensus is a 16cm2 for an auto and a 14 for a stick, 12 for a stick if you don't tow at all(smaller housing = more restriction and higher EGT's/faster rise,) I find my 18.5 isn't that slow, and EGT's are still plenty controllable, and with the extra volume from an IDI to spool it up, it might work just fine, or the 21 might even be necessary.

hmmmm I have a H1C on my 345 its a bit slow on the spool up but i have hit 15 lbs before (I have an external wastegate) it would be interesting to see hat it does on a 6.9 or 7.3 but i would suspect you wont get allot of boost at low rpms apparently they had a bit of a dead zone on the cummins anyways

The slow spool is due to the large exhaust housing, a smaller one will spool faster, same with your 345, that looks to be one of the larger hourings for sure, from that picture it looks bigger than the 18.5 on my Cummins.

The cummins guys consider that to be a slow spooling turbo... That has nothing on the non gated banks I had on the 6.9.
That's an old vid, was only making 27 psi... And I blew the 4-5 shift badly....
I have more fuel now, and top out at 33-34... Anyone want to buy my boost guage so I can get a new 60 psi one?

With the extra displacement/airflow of the 6.9/7.3, a given exhaust housing will spool faster than it would on a 5.9, just the same as a given compressor will make less boost at the same airflow rate.

I'm considering putting a holset on my idi because i have a wierd turbo kit from turbo engineering and the turbo should bolt right up. for what i can say put it on and see what kind of boost you run if it makes you uncomfortable add an external wastegate and presto your done.

I'd have to find an actual compressor map but I would think one would actually work fairly well.
