The controller is in contact with the coolant and only powers the glow plugs if the coolant is below a set temperature, 165* I believe. Once warmed up these engines fire off easily without glow plugs. I'll be interested to see how well the controller holds up.

question for everyone. The truck is running great, but my only complaint is the poor top speed and the high rpms? I know Im doomed with the C6 in there, but this thing really feels like its reving out at 65? Without adding a tach, I know theres no true answer, but is 65 average for this year and the C6. It has 31's on it, but Im thinking the rear diff is to blame along with the C6 and tires? I had a 79 bronco that would easily cruz @70mph, which had the same c6. would going to 33's and upgrading the rear diff help? if so what rear diff should i look for, and obviously i would have to upgrade the front diff to match?

Probably has 4.10's.
Gear swap would need to be done in both axles.
Best fix would be gears, auxiliary overdrive, or trans swap.

I found a neat little digital tach if you'd be interested.

What diffs are in it now? If it's 4.10s, yeah, you'll be screaming at 1:1 third gear at 65MPH. 3.55s will help for sure. Larger tires will help more, but you won't actually see it in the speedometer, because your real speed will be faster than the speedo speed. Beyond that, you'd have to try to find some of the old 3.08 gears, or get something like a Gear Vendors Overdrive unit.

The axle code on the door jam was C5, which is ford full float sterling 10.25 4.10. How hard would it be to find 3.08 for that housing? Are there specific gears i should look for and or steer away from?

A little problem arose today. I'm assuming it had a little to do with the highway driving and higher pressures in the lines, but I found a fuel leak directly behind the front driver side tire. I thought it was the stock fuel water separator, but there isn't any fuel visible inside the engine underneath the separator. Then I realized I had both the stock firewall mounted separator, along with the other one mounted on the engine with the Schrader valve? My main question is where could it be leaking from? I pulled the pin and nothing came out... And I'm assuming the lines run down through the finder and one has a leak? Is this common? Also, if I want to bypass the stock one on the firewall, how do I go about doing so? There's a lot of wire connections on the top of it. I've attatched some pictures.

Pics worked that time. Those wires are for the "Water in Fuel" light on the dash. The lines don't go inside the fender at all. I would follow the "in" line from the separator downward and back toward the selector valve; I'll bet when you reach the point where it runs along the frame, right about where your puddle is, you'll find a leak in the line. Or the leak may be further back, and the fuel just clinging to the outside of the line and eventually dripping off there.

That said, I've heard that those Stanadyne separators are notorious for leaking. Sorry to tell you this, but I've read that if you "pull its finger" (that is, pull the ring), when you let it go, whatever it opens sometimes doesn't fully close again and you've got a leak on your hands. I've been lucky, have resisted the temptation to touch mine, and it's been dry. But I've been looking at the generic filter mounts on eBay, Amazon, etc., and compatible spin-on separator/filters. Just haven't pulled the trigger yet. I figure when I get one and decommission the Stanadyne, I'll just do without the light, and keep an eye on the separator. Probably the best thing you can do to keep water out of your fuel is to buy diesel at places you know are reputable.

Dunno what it is about pics on this forum; they seem to work about half the time. And when they don't, they don't seem to warn the poster. They just create a bunch of bogus links with "Attachmentxxxxx" :dunno

Thanks for that and I'll take a look tomorrow. Most people have one or the other water seperators correct? should I just combine the two lines from the ones that prone to leaking? Like I said, its not actually leaking from the seperator, just some random spot underneath a piece of plastic just behind the finder and wheel well.

The 6.9 fuel filter does not include a water separator. The 7.3 changed this and incorporated a fuel/water separator into the fuel filter and eliminated the separator on the firewall. The 6.9 and 7.3 filter heads have different threads so the filters aren't interchangeable. You can bypass the separator on the firewall with a loop of fuel hose.
Regarding your gear ratio, the Sterling axle doesn't have a removable gear carrier, so you will nave to swap in a complete rear axle or replace the ring and pinion and shim properly.
edit: That puddle could be coming from your separator. There is a hose from the drain that goes in that direction.

Everything Is one step forward and two steps back with this truck. A new issue arose today... The truck started and immediately quit, which I know is from air in the line and the leak that I need to fix. I eventually got it started again, but the high idle piston thing (im assuming thats what it is) was stuck out all the way revving the engine high as hell. Well over the "high idle" rpm. I pushed the piston back in and oiled it up, but that doe'snt seem to help. I disconnected it all together, and that obviously worked for the revving, but when I drove it, it seemed to be incredibly peppy? i would hit the accelerator about 10% and b accelerating normal, and then press it to about 20% and it would haul ass like i had my foot to the floor. The problem disappears after the truck is warm and I have the idle control hooked back up. Should I just swap out the part that controls the cold idle? has anyone had this problem? Ps. I have a set of 3.54 axles that I'm going to pick up tomorrow. At least there's a little bit of progress...
