I bet I know where things went hay-wire; --- I bet that Dodge did not have locking hubs, and it had that silly vacuum-collar business that engages the axle; therefore, the Dodge only has a dust-cap (and I don't know for sure that it would even have the dust-cap, as those hubs are non-servicable/disposable).
And upon further investigation...this is EXACTLY what happened. They came off a dodge with the CAD (center axle disconnect) which has what you stated as dust caps and not locking hubs.
They would fit a 2wd except for the wheen centric problem. The ford wheel would be 1/4" all the way around too big for this adapter's centric. Maybe using conical lugs would work on a 2wd F250?
