OBS turbo on an IDI. i would like to get qicker spool so the exauhst will clean up a little better.

In other words a Powerstroke turbo on an IDI? Yes, it has been done. No, it is not very easy. There are a couple of ways to do it. You could do it like Flatlander did, or you could do it like the ebay guy who sells the kits (I think that was the deal).

Does anybody know if our trucks will spool up a OBS turbo that fast. I mean my wastegated turbo spools up quick, and I wouldnt think that one of those big ol OBS turbo would spool up that quick.

The OBS powerstroke turbo is non wastegated it would take longer to get spooled up then the factory IDI ATS turbo. If you want quick spool up stay with the factory turbo

Thats exactly what I was thinking, OBS psd's are nonwastegated were as the factory turbo IDI turbo is wastegated meaning less spool time.

Didn't somebody on TDS put a SD 7.3 turbo on his IDI along with an IC? Might have been the same guy who put a Spicer gear splitter in there too.

Rule of thumb as I understand it.

Smaller turbine housing (lower A/R) gives you faster spoolup and more boost at lower rpm's. Creates more restriction in exhaust + more heat higher EGT's. Eventually gets to point of diminishing returns due to backpressure.

Larger turbine housing (higher A/R) Slower spoolup. Allows more high end boost. Less restriction in exhaust = less heat lower EGT's. Allows exhaust gases to flow through the system more easily ultimately means more air through the intake.

To answer your last question, yes. Absolutely. But then you are not too different from the original wastegated setup and the heat issue still applies to some extent although less due to the extra flow of an external wastegate vs an internal. Less disruption of the exhaust flow coming out of the turbine as well.

I've got a question, I am not sure if the OBS PSD had EBPV's on them or not but what is the function of this? I know I have read in a few sigs about gutted EBPV's Just curious as to what They do?

oh yes they do and I curse it every morning when I fire up the '97 F450....
The EBPV is used to speed up warm up when the motor is cold. Not something I like when I am on a code 3 expedite.
when working proplerly, it chokes off the exhaust stream. kinda like a exhaust brake for the wrong reasons

So would it be true to say that a newer 99' and up PSD turbo would work better cause it is wastegated and probably has a smaller exhaust housing?
