I've changed many clutches on a/c compressors in the past with great success but in the course of trying to change the one on my 89 Saturday, I broke the some of the nose piece off of my compressor where the outer snap ring goes.
I called Carquest and they sold me a brand new compressor kit which included a bottle of oil, the big accumulator unit, orifice tube, all O rings, etc. The compressor also has the clutch installed. Cost of the whole kit was only 270 bucks!
Hell, the new clutch alone was 150 bucks, so I returned it and bought the kit instead. I just need to find a shop to vacuum it down and recharge it for me.

Bring it over! I have a vac pump and gauges. If you buy the freon, we can make it work!

Dang! I forgot you had that stuff. I'm confused though, the system has been converted to 134 and they did a nice job about labeling how much oil and the new charge amount but the hose connections are still R12 style. What gives?

Probably used adapters, most people dont change the high and low port hoses.

I need a new compressor, and make the switch to R134a as well. Was that a local purchase, or did you do it online? Do you have a kit or part number?

If you have a Carquest auto parts down there, they should be able to hook you up. It's a Carquest deal, because they were piecing the kit together at the store.
I'll look at my receipt when I get home later and get a part number. I really like the fact that it's new and not rebuilt.

I got a quote from Carquest in soCal for $294, but it did not list the o rings or oil. New compresor, clutch, orifice tube, maybe the drier (I didn't write it down). Still a good deal, but did your price have some sort of discount? They asked me ifI had an account or a shop.

Thanks for sharing this with us. Getting the A/C fixed is one of those things that I have been thinking about getting done for awhile, but I have yet to talk myself into it, probably mainly because I had no idea what to expect price-wise. $270 isn't bad at all for the stuff you got.

I always ask for a better price. You know, the squeeky wheel gets the oil. Lol

Drier should be included. O rings come with the compressor.

Hmm. Wonder if this works for a 6.9? It's a complete kit and then you just put R134 in?. Mine is broken and needs all new parts
