I have a brand new 7.3 GPC and brand new Bosch GP's. It has been around 70* F here and the GP's are doing an 18 sec cycle. Does this sound normal or too long?

I will hopefully doing the Push Button glow plugs soon.

To me that sounds too long.
In the winter mine cycle 15 sec max. then i hit the key, engine turns over once and fires right up.

@70 deg mine cycle about 10 sec.

In my usage Bosch start both my friends' truck and my truck at 5 seconds in. I ran up to 7 when i had a slight fuel leak at the return line.

Too long of a glow will kill them, but IDK how long. I had my stepdad riding with me in high elevation in the dead of winter and the truck was hard to start so I had him push the button while I tinkered under the hood... told him 10 seconds and he went a way too long and killed them

I got my push button in today, no more worries. Except for when Mom or Dad take the truck for coal, I don't think either of them has a very good countdown built in

That's good, by the time they figure out how to spell it it will be ready to start

18 seconds is not out of the realm of possiblity, but the system is calibrated to work with Beru. If the Bosch plugs have a lower resistance than Beru, and warm up slower, then they will glow longer.

I just shelved a set of Bosch plugs for my trusty Berus. I gotta get on the manual system bandwagen. I am thinking about a manual/auto combo that lets you decide off, manual on or auto. I'm thinking all the unnecessary cycling when the engine is already warm is just wearing them out.

That is what had me worried, after I shut the truck off they still completed a 18 sec cycle . Now even on the first start of the day I don't have to glow them at all and it fires off on the first revolution

Hey goose you only need a flip switch for off/manual/auto. If you don't push the button it stays off .

I trust myself more than a 25 year old computer. Some people like em' but I don't. 5 seconds is perfect on a good engine as long ad it isn't freezing out. 10 won't hurt them. They get to temp in 4 seconds iirc from when i tested them.

If I ever finish my project I'll share it. I'm making a timing mechanism for us manual push buttoners. That way when other people drive if ever there isn't any worries about them counting
