gp controller bypass

The relay on my '92 7.3 IDI looks as though it had a bypass on it. 2 orange wires from the "S" post on the relay are connected together and go into the cab and back out to the "+" side of the battery. The PO reconnected the wire and removed the switch. I would like to hook it up again.I have read that there should be a Purple wire to the gpc. I cannot find one. Could it be another color?
The GPC has gone out and I don't want to pull the Turbo to replace it. It is right under it.

What relay are you talking about with the "s" terminal? The glowplug relay is mounted to the glowplug controller, which you said is under the turbo, along with all the glowplug wires that receive the power from the controller.

This relay is located on the passenger fender. Wires go to the controller, starter, and ?. See the picture.

Yes, that relay in the picture is used to activate the starter, and is also used as a central connection point for power to various pieces on the truck. The glowplug system power is fed from this point, but it's just a power feed to the controller, that's all.

If your glowplug system is still hooked up as original, to convert it to manual glowplugs, all you need to to is find the white wire on the glowplug controller, take it off and tape it, and then put another wire to the terminal where the white wire was, run this new wire into the cab and to a switch. The other side of the momentary switch has a wire that runs to a good ground. Once you ground this terminal with the button(where the white wire was) the controller will activate the glowplugs.

If you can't get to the controller to do these modifications, you might want to think about moving it. It might be in harms way near the hot turbo anyway.

Thanks to all.
I am going to try and get the wiring off of the dead controller and leave it where it is and move the new one to a more accessable and cooler spot.
That way I don't have to remove the turbo.
