Needed to move the truck. It hasnt been started in roughly a month, and that start was for all of a minute. Was in the teens last night, and was roughly 25*....

Did a 9 second glow, hit the starter, and within a second of cranking (which told me the batteries need a trickle charger put on them, cranking speed was lower than it should be). Roared to life, missing on a couple cylinders, but caught in about three seconds. Had to move the truck, but with a non working water pump made it quick, in about 20 seconds. Man I miss that truck!

That stinks man. I definitely know the feeling. My truck is stuck in Idaho for another few months and I'm stationed in San Diego. I can't wait to get it here already!

Fordguy if I remember correctly your cover had some stripped bolt holes right? Or was there more wrong with it? If its expensive or hard to find you might just take that cover off and fix it. There is just a square chunk of steel on the back side of the cover with threads in it that the water pump bolts to.

One front cover is lost in shipping, another one was sent, but I dont know when it will get here. Another option I'm told of that sounded decent was to instal some 8mm 1.25 studs in place of the bolts and go from there. That option is sounding good.

An IDI firing to life in the cold is a beautiful thing! Its a horrible thing when they don't fire to life though

I was under the impression your truck was getting a non stock engine soon? But yes Oldmisterbill told me about adding studs to hang the water pump on, sounded like a really good idea but would it fix things if the bolt holes themselves are stripped or would we be helicoiling the bad holes or at least cutting new threads in them. Man I hated the water pump job on my 86 just because getting all the goo off the plate it bolts too was a major chore, and I was always worried I'd fire it up and it would leak. Thankfully that didn't happen, 4 years and lots of run time since then.

shoot, I do that 8 times a year.

I'm regularly gone 28 days at a time, come home, connect the batteries, and fire her off. Never had a problem.
My gas pickup truck, I've normally got to pour fuel in the bowls and let her warm up for a few minutes (while it runs like crap).

What I don't like about helicoils in that situation ,is there is not much "meat" to hold them. If I had the cover plate off ,I's put in grade 8 stude with a little electric wrench to make sure they dont strip out. I might even go with stainless studs. There is no real reason to remove them.
What a crappy setup that is.

Standard hardware stainless will stretch really bad.
