glow plug issues

ok, so i got new ends put on my glow plug wires, and all new glow plugs, now the controller kicks on like its suppose to, but doesn't do the click click click when the plugs are warm enough. the controller starts smoking a little and the large wide metal strap on the controller is really hot, Any suggestions to what might be going on with this???

Could be the relay sticking. Switch it with another one and try it.

what kind of glow plugs did you use? have thought about going with push button gps?

You have a dead short on one or more of the GP's. Find it or you will destroy the controller. The wire(s) should be real hot.

Old school, My controller does the same exact thing. I bought the truck with all plugs bad except 2. The controller was clicking. After all new (motorcraft) GP's the controller stays on for about 15sec then off and no clicks. I replaced the relay with no luck so I bypassed the controller untill I solve the issue. My truck has cold starting issues that I believe is Glow plug related. I have checked the plugs but will check again. Please update us if you solve your issue, it might be helpful to me too.

i used Motorcraft ZD9 glow plugs, and which relay are you talking about, when i think relay i think a small black box with like 5 little spade connectors on it, so please explain to me a little better

when I say relay I am talking about the timer/gp relay. The one behind the air cleaner.

Replaced injectors, and I have the new ip sitting in front of me, just waiting now on my ferret timing pulse adapter to get here.

ok i checked all the wires for shorts, are you saying i should check the glow plugs themselves for shorts too? and i dont think the plugs are heating, I let it cycle for about 7 or 8 seconds, and try to start it and it wont start, by the time i get back under the hood, everything seems cool to the touch other than that wide strap on the controller.

If that wide strap on the controller relay stay's hot with the key OFF then the relay contacts are stuck/welded ON. The other side of the relay (Large nut) with the Yellow or Orange wires goes straight to the battery B+. With the key off, check for 12 volts with the + lead on the strap and the - lead to ground. If you have 12 volts then the relay contacts are stuck ON, then you have voltage to the glow plugs all the time. You would then have to replace the relay.
Disconnect the RED wire from the ignition switch, did the 12 volts disappear from the strap, YES then your IGN.SW is bad.
