fuel tank selector switch

My switch separated from the dash, has anyone had this happen and how did you fix it?

I don't want to go tearing into the dash until I've got some kind of idea of how to go about it...

Well, I took the bottom plate off to see if the instrument panel would come off but, I didn't see any screws or bolts holding the instrument panel...

I did notice that the switch is screwed onto the dash via little plastic 'bullets' and both of them broke away from the back of the dash...

I sure hope super glue will work in reattaching those little plastic 'bullets' back on the dash.

I wonder if the panel snaps on and off???

From I do see, it would be *ell to replace the headlight switch. the tank selector is right on the right side of the headlight switch.

Oh cr*p, I should have mentioned that I have a 1992 1/2 F-350 CC...

Can you put sheet-metal screws through the "bullets" ??

That's how the switch body is or was mounted to the back of the dash face.

Once I can get the instrument panel separated from the rest of the dash, I should be able to reattach the 'bullets' back on using super glue or gorilla glue, I hope...

I think the plastics are becoming brittle, the bullets look like they are kinda crumbly... I wish I could upload some pics, but they are waay too big...

There are two silver plastic strips that have the screws hidden behind them. They are on either side of the steering column. Just pop them out and you will see the screws. *Caution* The PRND21 cable is attached to the dash panel. Others will chime in, with how to work around it.

My tank selector started to break this past summer and I was able to repair it before it completely broke and fell into the dash. You should be able to pull the top of the front cover of your dash back (gently) and get a look behind it. I couldn't repair the bullets, so I ended up using a sheet metal screw backer (like a j-clip, used for mounting speakers) to hold the top of the switch mount. Yes, I now have a small black screw just above the rocker switch but it's centered and I used a nice black trim screw and most people don't notice it unless I point it out. It looks especially ok on a 15 year old truck with 230K miles.

I just broke down and bought a plastic welder from harbor freight so I could repair stuff like that and put in replacement dash vents etc. Don't know how well it works yet, but it's supposed to be a whole lot better than glue.
I just scored some real nice dash vents at the bone yard that aren't all wobbly so I can't wait to try it.

Keep us posted about that "plastic welder" and how well it works...as our plastic parts do get brittle with age.
I'd like to reinforce some of my door panel mounts on the backside.

ABOUT DASH VENTS--the pin on the side where they pivot on--take a razor blade---and score them around the dia of that shaft part---corkscrew like--makes em stay where you position em----to get em out--you need two SMALL straight blade screwdrivers--to slide alongside the vent--to pry out on the pin pieces--they attach to a flat piece of plastic---

Mine did the same thing. I also repaired as others have described with small black trim screws from the front side of the panel, but being picky about my truck I wasn't satisfied. I ended up buying a new dash trim panel from Ford to replace my old brittle one...

How much did that cost you? I saw one for around 180, not sure exactly how much though.

It seems that NOS would be just as brittle, imho.. Do they still make new ones? Actually, I wonder if a complete dash can be obtained new? My dash mounting tabs on the top have all broken except for one that's left of center...
