Perhaps somebody swapped in a gasoline truck sized filler? Heck if I know.

Thanks for the link. https://www.amazon.com/TDI-Diesel-Fuel-Nozzle-Adapter/dp/B00696Y74O

This is almost exactly what I built at the muffler shop... even used a piece of scrap new pipe.... took all of maybe 10 minutes and $5 for the guys time.

Only difference in my "redneck adapter" is the semi pump nozzle part is longer by a couple inches...

Right. Yours sounds better but it’s interesting that such an adapter was made, possibly genuine Audi?

been awhile since i messed with the older trucks, but I do remember that on some years we took and punched out the restricter in the fuel neck to fit the bigger nozzle also ran a seperate vent hose to the side of the filler neck from the top of the tank I know my 96 i did that
something like this

See that's what I was talking about above.
Mine 94 PSD has that type of system.
Maybe it was a chassis cab thing.

Our 92 F-250 could use the big truck nozzles, as can my 03.

Our 88 can not use the big truck nozzles because of the “restrictor” just behind the cap.

Transfer Flow used to make (may still) filler necks for our older rigs that would vent much better than stock and accept big nozzles at big rig pumps.

My '86 crew cab has them. Work well. Did home made mods to my filler necks on the '86 F250, works great.

But, modified or replaced with aftermarket kit....... you gotta ditch the annoying and less than functional stock filler necks.

Transfer Flow doesn't make the kits for the old trucks anymore because the most important part of their kit was a Ford part that isn't made anymore. That part is a different style of roll over valve that was specifically used in the F-Superduty truck fuel tanks that allows a much larger vent hose to be attached. Check out the upfitters document Q-29 for more details on the part numbers and new grommet number. Transfer Flow used one part for both kits but Ford offered two part numbers, one for the midship tank and one for the rear. You can still find used ones in F-Superduty trucks in wrecking yards every now and then but be really careful pulling them out as they are very fragile by now. A few years ago I bought the last new one that Transfer Flow had for my project and to find that one I had to beg the guy to dig around their shop and engineering offices to find it. I do have the Transfer Flow install instructions for the old trucks and they are helpful to visualize what needs to be done to create your own version. Several folks over the years on other forums have posted their efforts to mimic these with mixed efforts and results. I like the results for the two trucks I've done, they don't let you run the big pump wide open to fill but it's far superior to being stuck on click 1 on the auto nozzle. The biggest issue I found with the old parts I took out is that the rubber tube that goes down the middle of the filler neck to actually put the fuel in the tank has softened and partially collapsed over the years and that was a big part of the backup. If there was a way to just replace that internal rubber hose, it would be a great middle ground to make fill ups livable again without having to do all the modification which was kind of a pain.

Tried to attach the PDFs from Transfer Flow but not sure if people can see or get them. PM me if you can't get them from this post and I'll send them by message. Or someone let me know how I can post them for people to download.
