From 460 to IDI

Is swapping an engine in a van going to be too much trouble. I have found a nice little Class C camper. I would buy a IDI truck and remove the engine and transmission. Can the doghouse be removed in one piece or should I swap it all out from under the chassis?

How much work is ahead of me?

From what I know about anything engine related in a van, you'd be better to take the motorhome body off the frame and put it on another cab/chassis with a IDI already in it... I have a very good story about how we removed a 225 slant 6 from a Dodge van in high school once ! It was the quickest engine removal our shop teacher had ever seen....till he realized the engine was laying on its side out on the parking lot instead of swingin from the engine hoist...!!

I'm guessing the truck and van bodies are different

I'm thinking the easiest way is to remove the front suspension and drop it all out as a single unit.

Alot. But it is doable. I think you will need to pull the trans out from under neath, but the motor will need to go in through the grill.

What motor is in the motorhome now?

Yes they are different. My '57 is built on a motorhome chassis. The advantage is that a bigger downpipe fits a lot easier.

Taking the front suspension out would seem to be a very hard way to do it. I can see where you are coming from though.

Class C is an Econoline Front. The big box RV's are Class A's/

Too bad they did all that extra work to it. It would have been a good deal otherwise.

I never liked when the PO puts new tires in a vehicle before the sale. They are normally cheap and not something I would put on mine nor a friends vehicle.

class C is van looking front. And yep very easy job. Just take everything in the front off, pull engine out the front. I actually prefer working on vans, cause you get to stand up instead of being bent over a core support or a fender all the damn time.
