ND type starters do tolerate gear irregularities better than the Mitsu starters. easiest way to tell what you have if it has a nosecone on the bendix or not. if it does, it's a mitsu starter. the only thing bad about a ND starter is they don't tolerate voltage drops. they will melt down their armatures faster than a mitsu starter will.
here are pics of the ring gear. I have taken the pics off a t19 flywheel, but they all are the same. note from the backside of the flywheel where the bendix engages from, the teeth have a bevel cut. the face of the flywheel has the teeth straight cut.
