Favorite injector cleaners?

I am tossing a new fuel filter on it, and am looking for the best injector cleaner and/or oil,etc. to fill it with.. I ran some Diesel Kleen in the tank, and the truck doesn't run as crisp now. It sounds like there is a slight tick ,( Plugged injector (?) ) . It idles fine, but it doesn't feel as crisp and clear as it use to. I'm thinking the Diesel Kleen cleaned out some gunk, which then found its way into the injectors.

Been running Diesel Kleen for a long time and never an issue with IP or injectors. From what I've seen here on this forum alot of members run Diesel Kleen or Stanadyne.

It won't hurt anything to fill the filter with Diesel Kleen. I have been running it in my tanks without fail for more the a year. You could also fill the filter with straight ATF, this will help clean and lubricate as well. When I change my fuel filter out I always fill the new one with ATF, since I never have any diesel around to refill the new filter before install. Some peope mix ATF in their tanks and use that as a lubricant and cleaner for the fuel system as it's a lot cheaper than most diesel fuel treatments

When filling a new fuel filter make sure you pour the fluid only in the outer holes. That way the filter will actually be able to filter the atf or whatever you have poured into it. Remember any trash getting into the large hole in the filter will end up in the pump. Thats a really bad thing. Do this with the oil filter too...

Dextron, Mercon 3......... Castrol, Vavoline, it's all more or less the same. I would use a name brand of some type and not a generic store brand. I usually buy a few bottles of the Castrol Mercon 3 and use it, it's always worked well.

i used global. its a universal fluid covers all types of fluid.

Have you not run any cleaners before? If not, first off , shame on you, then second, it is quite possible that you may have opened a minor can of worms. Thankfully it's not winter so no big deal, but if you don't run cleaner's regularly and then all teh sudden pop a heavy dose in, it gets in the tank and finds a nice layer on the walls of your tank of wax and crud that it breaks loose all the sudden. It can have you going through 2 or 3 or more filters one after another in short order . Usually slower to clog in summer, in winter it can really mess you up.

The only cleaner I have ran in one of these engines was the Diesel Kleen. I have only had it for about 2 months, and am now trying to freshen things up. I've had several IDI's, but have only driven this one. The first one I drove straight home, tore out, and spent a year putting it in my '75. Then sold the '75 without even test driving it, other than on my driveway. The other one had a blown head gasket, and I am still rebuilding it. So I am new to maintenance on these, but not to them in general.


By the way... That is exactly what I did. I tossed that whole bottle in the tank.
