F-450 update. Some issues.

First off, after sitting for 4 years, I put in a couple of fresh batteries, cycled the glow plugs, and on the third crank, she lit off.

It has a very pronounced diesel "clatter" that I've never heard from an IDI before. Sounds like direct injection. This sound will change pitch sometimes.

When getting off the throttle and letting it fall to idle, it will die.

Dash lights no worky. All the other lights work, just not the dash lights.

High beam switch is forked.

Wipers no worky, and are stuck in the upright position.

Ignition switch no worky.

The electrical stuff I can handle. I need to know what's up with the clatter, and the dying. Motor only has 25k on a professional rebuild. (odometer verified with the reciepts.) But it sat for 4 years. I chased a family of mice out of it, and when I looked under the hood once it had warmed up, I saw like 50 spiders crawling all over the engine.

Probably have some slobbering injectors if it's been sitting for a while. Nothing critical, just sticky. I'd get about 3 or 4 cans of Diesel Purge and run it through as per instructions ( it doesnt go in the tank or the filter, you have to rig up some bypass fuel lines feed and return, and run it in straight ) and it'll probably take care of it

How long did it run with the clatter? I had the same sound in a truck that sat for 8 years with a bad head gasket, but went away in about 90 seconds. If you have old oil, it may take longer to pump up the lifters and lube the piston bores. Did they clean out the piston oilers when rebuilding? Those little nozzles are easy to clog up.

I had mice in mine, too. They eat up the insulation on the wiring.

The dying could be from that old diesel fuel that's in there. I bet a lot of the fuel issues might go away with a few fresh gallons of diesel or biodiesel and then just run it hard once you're sure you have oil pressure everywhere. I've heard some 7.3 IDIs that sound almost like a PSD in their clatter and tone, but you should be used to that having owned your 88. The timing could be too far advanced, and in all probability those lifters have bled down.

Well, it did it for the 40 mile drive home. We'll see if old fuel is the problem. I'll be running it quite a bit today. I noticed alot of smoke from it, but it was late evening, and I couldn't identify the color.

I'll bring more info later today. I'm gonna go start working out the electrical bugs.

The truck went into a "death wobble" today. (anyone that's ever owned a dodge 4x4 knows what I'm talking about)

So, it looks like I get to replace some front end bushings.

Has alot more power now that the mouses have been evicted.
Most of the clatter has went away, but it's still noticable.(Well, it was, up until the death wobble shook the exhaust in half about 3 inches past the back of the cab.) Now she sounds like an obnoxious big block gasser.
Changed starter solenoid, now cranks with the key.
Changed dimmer switch, and headlight switch, now have headlights, but parking lights/dash lights are blowing 30 amp fuses. I hear a relay clicking for the running lights, just haven't found it yet.
Both tanks work, but front guage is screwed. Not sure about rear guage yet.
Still dies evey time I come to a stop, or try to downshift.
Wiper switch works, but wiper motor is toast. It's non interval, so I'm going to the pick n pull monday to get the interval switch and control box, as well as the necessary plugs.
Squirters no work.
Cold start is still a *****. Need to spend more time on the glow plugs/relay, and I'm wondering if there may be an air leak in the fuel return system.

The stall on decel is a fuel quality issue. 9 out of 10 its a sticky governor in the injector pump (small amounts of corrosion). Replace the fuel filter run some ATF through the tank and it should clear up after a few hours of running. Fill the new filter with some ATF while you're at it.

Pull apart all the electrical connectors you can find under the hood and inspect for corrosion.

Thats crazy what you pulled out of the air cleaner. Goes to show you what it takes to kill and IDI

Looks like its a fairly clean truck though.

Are you running the engine on the fuel that the truck came with?

I've put about 15 gallons of new fuel in it, Should be diluting the old stuff. Gonna fill up the rear tank tomorrow.

If it's having cold start issues, along with al the other symptoms, My guess would be on a slobbering injector or two after sitting that long
Combine the cold start problem with the excess clatter and that equals a bum injector or two ( or three or more ) . If you can find a place that'll test them for free it would be nice, if not, jut buy new ones, not worth fooling with rebuilts

Might want to change out the fuel too. You may have critters. At least get some algae killer in the tank for that old fuel.
