Excursion question

I'm considering buying an Excursion. My budget is $10K right now, but I'll probably go up to $12K or so. I know that the fuel system is an expensive repair/maintenace item that has to be done every so often, but how often? In other words, how many miles will a set of injectors and a pump go before then need to be rebuilt?

I've heard there were transmission issues with the early 01, are there any other bugs that I should be aware of?

What kind of fuel mileage should I expect on these? I've been under the impression that 18~19 is pretty much standard, but I have seen them "advertized" on CL with 21 and 24mpg on a 4x4. Don't get me wrong, I know how trust worthy a CL ad is. Just curious what folks around here are getting. This vehicle would see at least 90% of its use on the highway at speeds of 60 to 65 mph, and I'd probably go so far as to get what ever I needed to re-program it to be as effiecent as possible.

the psd doesnt have an injector pump.it has a high pressure oil pump.its rare for one to die.keep up on the oil changes and fuel filter changes,the injectors can last as long as the engine.

The transmisssions are the same from 99-03(the 4r100)
then then you got the 5r100(torqueshift) in 03-05 and they came with the 6.0 or the gasser

Good to know. I know the injectors get re-built rather than replaced. How often to they need rebuilt?

Wehave the stock set of injectors on ours at 300k, minus one that went bad a few years ago. Ive never heard of anyone needing to replace them, they always do it as an upgrade. A lot depends on the driving style as for fuel mileage. When my dad drives it he gets around 20, I get 22-23. One thing you will want to get though is a chip, we have a DP and love it, better mileage and an unbelievable amount of power. Other than that the pedistal and turbo o- rings are prone to leaking, along with the 'non-servicable' plug on the HPOP, even though it is servicable.

Trannies built from 07/27/00 to 03/23/01 had a mechanical diode in it, that was a problem.

I have an 03 with the 6.0 and TorqShift 5 speed transmission. On the Interstate I get ~20mpg. Mixed commute is ~15. You will love an Excursion. I do not plan on getting rid of mine..... EVER!!! The PSD's are good engines. I agree, keep up on the maintenance and you will be good for a long time. I have 109k on mine, and it has all the factory parts on it. There is no set interval on injectors like on an IDI.
