Engine Swap

I keep coming across newer gas Super Duty trucks with the body that I want with blown engines. What would it take to swap in a 7.3IDI? Would it be feasible? I really like my diesel engine and would also plan on doing a turbo build if the swap isn't crazy expensive.

And I did try a search but it didn't really turn up much.

as long as you could power the cab, lights, ect, it would be a relatively easy swap.

The above is true plus this... Do it with a zf 5 speed trans. Then all the idi motor needs for wiring is 12 volts to the starter and fuel shutoff solenoid in the pump. The alternater is simple as is the glow plug controller.... In Ca you can't do this motor change because of the smog crap....

Sounds like I have some explaining to do to the wife on how we are gonna get our next truck.

On another note, I have seen a few Detroit Diesel 6-71's for sale for a good price. Is it easy to swap one of these engines into a Super Duty chassis? Are there any considerations with these engines, such as mixing oil into the fuel as it is a 2 stroke? Also if it is possible to put the engine in, what are the options for a transmission?

I don't know much about Detroits, but I feel pretty safe in saying that you don't mix oil into the fuel. I know we get used to 2 strokes being that most of us were brought up around boat motors, and weed wackers and chain saws, but not all 2 cycles draw their air through the crankcase as is the case with those, which is why they don't have a sump for oil. Half the locomotives running around are 2 strokes, and have more typical crankcases, and I believe Detroits are set up like those, where as you have a blower that forces intake air in through cavities that lead to the sides of the cylinders. When the piston drops down far enough, it forms its own intake valve and lets fresh air in under presure, while purging the exhaust out of a valve in the head. As the piston comes up, it closes this port and then you have your compression and combustion cycles.

A detroit diesel uses a roots blower to force air into the cylinder. therefor the crankcase can be filled with oil (a straight oil too either SAE-30 or SAE-40). Just carry a bunch with you because detroits love to leak oil. I love the smell of a Detroit in the morning!!

One cool thing about detroits (among others) is you can run them "backwards". Its great for boats with twin screws b/c the screws turn opposite directions.

Nope

Yep, they dont mix. Just run diesel, one of the common misconceptions for reasons you stated prior.

6-71 are pretty large motors...I think like 1600+ pounds?

I would stick with an IDI over one though, takes a lot of work to get one running good, that doesnt leak oil

Actually I just looked and they are about 2000 pounds, so basically double the weight of an IDI

Someone on FTE weighed his motors with all accessories and he got about 1420ish. A bit more than I thought, but about what it felt like moving it! Certainly a lot more than my 454 weighed. That was cake to pull and move.

That was a pretty good video, and the comments explained a few things. It would be a cool project. I would throw a turbo on it, maybe a Holset HX40. But the thing is what transmission would work? Also the truck will have to be 4x4.

I have thought about just doing the 6BT or 4BT, but they are uber-expensive. So an IDI or some other mechanical engine is what I would be going with.
