engine stand mounting opinions

i purchased a 1 ton HF engine stand today.
$141.57 out the door.
got her home, and assembled.
engine is now prelim clean and ready for disassemble.

i have never put one of these on an engine stand, and i know its a heavy pig.

since these engines have adapter plates, i started thinking maybe the adapter isnt the best place to mount the engine to the stand.

did you remove the adapter plate?

Left adapter plate on ... for months.

I left the adapter plate on. The way it is set up, it will bolt up to the 7.3 Power Stroke too. If you can find the right length bolts. Around here they are like hens teeth. Can't seem to find them at the hardware or auto-parts stores. The Nut & Bolt supply houses are closed on the weekend.

Here's how I hang mine. I use the two top and two center, better balance when rolling over. I'll see if I can find my HF stand with engine on it.

I did take the adapter plate off. Like you, it seems like a better idea than bolting to the adapter plate.

I pull the adapter plate off. A local guy I knew was building a 7.3 IDI on a stand and had it bolted to the adapter plate. His adapter plate broke and the engine fell. After that I figured I wouldn't use the adapter plate. Not sure if he was missing bolts on the adapter plate or what, but I didn't want to risk a fall.

I left the adapter plate on. I blocked up the front to take some weight even though this engine stand held a power stroke for a month without blocking. When I turned it I reblocked it. Use a bottle jack to lift a little then block it up. I like my feet, didn't want to take any chances.

i ended up removing the adapter plate.
grease and grime needs to be removed anyhow.
