The main reason for doing this conversion is so I can move the radiator back a hair to put an intercooler in. However, I do hope to see some free horsepower, and easier maintanance, and potentially longer life from the water pump.

Have you used the port on the driver's side head? It is usually plugged with a 9/16" square pile plug. It is the same place, relatively speaking, as the one on the front lower edge of the passenger side head that gets a pipe nipple for the heater hose.
