55mph climbing loaded

i purchased and installed an inexpensive gauge....aaaaand am not sure its working properly:dunno

There are a number of factors that can affect EGT readings...transmission, rear end, turbo vs n/a, intercooled or not, 4x2 vs 4x4, SRW vs DRW, where the probe's located in the exhaust, how heavy your load is, etc. Heck, even wind conditions can be a factor...I'll notice a 100 to 150 (sometimes even up to 200) degree jump in EGT if I'm running at freeway speeds into a significant headwind. So, it's a bit difficult to take my EGT numbers and expect similar results out of your truck.

That said, I usually see about 250 F at idle, 450 to 550 at 55 mph on level ground unloaded, maybe between 600 and 700 degrees on an incline unloaded, and I don't recall what my "loaded" numbers are. That's with a 6.9l in a 4x4 SRW extended-cab truck with a ZF5, 4.10 gears, factory tires, and a lumber rack (which has a negative effect on aerodynamics and therefore fuel economy). My probe is mounted in the ATS stock location, which is pre-turbo, but in the up-pipe going into the turbo.

I hope that helps some...and, posting some more details about your truck might be helpful as well ;Sweet

Did you search first? Somebody just asked this question last week, and there was a good thread on it. Lots of people posting their numbers.

awesome...thank you. now running a turbo it should cool your egts slightly? correct me if im wrong.

my gauge never had read over 600 degrees even wide open with my foot to the floor in 4th haulin up hills. the engine temp climbs to about 230 though then goes right back down when i top it. but EGTs should at least climb to 1000 or more with my pump tweaked. because it ROLLS coal when i mash it.

I think you have a problem. If you can block out the sun while pulling a trailer uphill, and your EGT gate is telling you that its only 600 in the exhaust, then you can't trust the gauge. Don't pull that hard again until you are sure the gauge is working right because its really easy to go past 1200 if you blow that much smoke while loaded for more than a few seconds.

If you are pulling up a long hill, stay out of the smoke for the time being.

My numbers assume almost no smoke at all even when pulling hard:

idle: 250
55 MPH unloaded, flat ground: 400
55 MPH light load flat ground: 500
55 MPH hill climbing: 850
55 MPH hill climbing towing,
towing 3500lbs up a 10% grade, can get me close to 1100, but I can't quite hold that speed all the way to the top.

600 is way too low to be a reliable reading for anything other than empty cruising.

Is there a switch anywhere on the back of the gauge? What gauge did you use?

that is the exact gauge. inexpensive i know but i figured it would be fairly accurate. i just checked all the connections and sent an email about sending it back for an exchange....he said go ahead and return it for another one.

on a side note...figured id share a story. my buddy has a 2001 cummins (blows absolutely NO smoke). Funniest thing in the world today. i showed him up close and personal (filled his entire cab with soot) what the smoke throwing capabilities of these IDIs was.:rotflmao

Well there your problem right there, you got a pyro for a ricer. You need to add euro tail lights, neons, spinners, spoiler & some NAWZZZZ to make it read right. ;Really

LOL

My truck when it was N/A with the pump turned up, 4.10 gears, 31s & a straight pipe could hit 1000-1100* in a hurry. Getting on the highway all it would do is smoke & not really move.
I installed the turbo & getting on the highway now the most I tend to see merging is about 800* & more or less smoke free.

Changed one there since I'm not a big trailer hauler but just my personal exp.

IDLE-300*
55mph no load flat ground-500-600*
65mph loaded (trailer or something in tow) flat ground in OD with 3.55 gears & turbo- 900* & 10mpg with an empty 16ft trailer
55mph climbing no load- 700* no huge hills around here
55mph climbing loaded- prob close to 900*

No, no, no, it's also because it's for a 4 cylinder ricer!:rotflmao He needs to double what the gauge reads!

Look on the back of the gauge. Mine had a plastic screw for a flat head screw driver that was for swirching between two different settings on the gauge. The idea was to use the same gauge for 2 different lengths of lead wires since longer wires have more resistance and require a different calibration.

Any instructions come with the gauge?

If you had a Laser Temp reader you could shoot the exhaust spot and co-ordinate that with the gauge. Since the low gauge indication is 400*, you'd have to speed wayup to get to 400* to shoot it.

Either that or put some RICE in the fuel tank. :puke:

all BS aside. its only gonna read 4 cylinders anyway. i cant very well put that probe on both sides of the engine at once now can i?

and who cares if it IS for a **** burner? exhaust gas temp is exhaust gas temp.

i coulda bought one for a damn airplane and it still would have read close to correctly.

bottom line is the gauge reads incorrectly, meaning its faulty.:backoff

ill be sending it back for a different one this week.

for all of you who actually HELPED in your replies thanks to you;Sweet

for the rest of you:moon::moon:
