e4od not shifting question?

in my 91 last year before i parked it for winter the tranny felt like it was slipping but i wasnt sure now i got it back out for the year and when i try to put it in gear i only have forward but what is weird is when i go from park it engages in drive where it is supposed to be in reverse or neutral. even when the truck is not running i cant get it to go in neutral but if i drive it just a short distance it does not seem to slip.
im just wondering if there is anything i can check or if i should try and get a different tranny. thanks

Check the wiring at the gear selector on the tranny.

Also pull the codes.

Do a little searching here. There is plenty of info on the E4OD problems here.
