I installed an Optishift controller in my '93 F250 last year. The optishift has a trans temp function and I began paying attention to it. When I'm just putting around town for short drives the trans temp is fine. If I take it for a decent drive, especially on the interstate or somewhere that I can keep the speed up to 60-70 for a while, or if I'm towing the trans temp will get pretty high. It'll get up to 230-240, I've seen it get as high as 250. I wasn't real sure if I trusted the temp reading on the Optishift cause I didn't know how it got its temp reading since it just plugs into the trans at the same two places that the factory TCM plugs into the trans. A couple months ago I installed a glowshift pyrometer and trans temp gauge. The the temp the optishift shows matches what the temp on the glowshift gauge is showing so it's definitely getting too hot. I put a new aluminum radiator in the truck last year so I thought maybe it wasn't letting fluid run through the trans cooler but I checked and fluid is running through the cooler. The transmission shifts fine, probably because the Optishift is controlling the shifting, and it doesn't slip. The only mechanical problem I can see with the transmission is that sometimes when I shift from park to drive or reverse it will take a few seconds to go into gear which I assume is a valve body issue. The truck only has just over 95K miles on it but it's done alot of pretty heavy towing during those miles, mainly my father in law's 5th wheel camper and my mowing/landscaping trailers. This is my favorite truck and I want to keep it in great shape so I don't mind having the trans rebuilt if that's what it needs but it's not really giving me what I would consider normal symptoms that would suggest it's time for a rebuild. What do you E4OD experts think?

im guessing that controller is using the tot sensor on the solenoid pack to read its temps.
she shouldn't be running so warm.my guess is the rad you put in is sub par.however a large enough aux cooler should more than do the trick.do you have one on there at all now? if so what is it?

that is pretty toasty. hopefully the trans is not hurt from that hea. i got a trucool max trans cooler last summer and the thing is sweet. they can be had for like $125 from dieselsite.com and they are well worth it. i would be a little concerned that there is another issue causing the high heat other than just a bad cooler though. my trans could get hotter than 210 in traffic unloaded and then it had to be almost !00*F outside for that to happen.

Here is the cooler i got.....i would get it again i had to as well!

Running those temps you have shortened the life on that trans. By how much can't be determined. I defenantly would be installing the cooler posted about. But plan on a rebuild in the future. With my Rodney Red aluminum radiater and my bypassing it my BTS E4OD has never seen 200 degrees no matter what I tow. About 160 to 180 is all I ever see for temps. When it spikes to 190 I'm watching for trouble..I do not run the trans fluid thru the radiater and have forgotten what size cooler I have but it nearly as big as whats posted about here. Brian at BTS told me all I needed was the psd supre duty coler and to not run thru any radiater. So I went a size or two larger just to CMA...

Haven't put an aux cooler on it. It still has the small factory one, at least I assume it's factory. It's just like the one you replaced in your thread 94IDIT. The aluminum radiator is a Spectra that I bought new and installed. I had been toying with the idea that it needed a bigger/new trans cooler so I'll order the one you posted the link to. I knew those temps weren't doing it very much good and luckily I haven't driven it long enough to get it that hot very much. The only time it saw 250 was last summer. My '00 F350 PSD dually was down so I used the '93 to pull my 35' 5'er to the park. It's only about 5 miles from my house but it was about 95 degrees that day and the trans got hot quick.

Reduce trans temps by using Synthetic ATF
Mine survived a defective oil filter in wich the trans temp soared to 340F
Turned the ATF black but the transmission did not suffer any damage.
Still shifting perfect today.

A bigger cooler is a must have for this tranny. The cooler 94IDITurbo recommends is really good, Basically a 99 and V10 aux cooler wit out the Ford brackets.

Delayed forward/reverse engagement is usually a worn or sticking boost valve.

Damn....superwifey had JUST came back to Canada from US, was in long lineup at border idling waiting...

Drove a minute into Canada and truck died, puked trans fluid from lil rubber cap on bottom of bellhousing, (I think front seal) and it wouldn't start or move.

She managed to get towed home on trailer free...parked it.

I came home, fired up n drove it, it feels ok compared to previously, I just don't know...I think all that Idling heated it up super hot as she has the catalytic converter next to trans on the 5.8 engine!

Not sure but I'm gonna take it to a trans specialist I think have it checked out.

Hate AUTO's almost as much as Chrome...wait maybe more!

Get a good cooler and take the radiator out of the loop. Upgrading the lines to 3/8 lines is a good upgrade also. Jasper makes a nice kit.

I'm ordering the above mentioned cooler. With that, the turbo you're sending me, and new valve cover gaskets I've got some work ahead of me! Shew, I just got done doing bellowed up pipes, new turbo pedestal, new turbo outlet housing, fuel bowl rebuild, new fuel rail sleeves, and new IPR o ring in my PSD! If I didn't know better, I'd think I was a mechanic!
