I installed an Optishift controller in my '93 F250 last year. The optishift has a trans temp function and I began paying attention to it. When I'm just putting around town for short drives the trans temp is fine. If I take it for a decent drive, especially on the interstate or somewhere that I can keep the speed up to 60-70 for a while, or if I'm towing the trans temp will get pretty high. It'll get up to 230-240, I've seen it get as high as 250. I wasn't real sure if I trusted the temp reading on the Optishift cause I didn't know how it got its temp reading since it just plugs into the trans at the same two places that the factory TCM plugs into the trans. A couple months ago I installed a glowshift pyrometer and trans temp gauge. The the temp the optishift shows matches what the temp on the glowshift gauge is showing so it's definitely getting too hot. I put a new aluminum radiator in the truck last year so I thought maybe it wasn't letting fluid run through the trans cooler but I checked and fluid is running through the cooler. The transmission shifts fine, probably because the Optishift is controlling the shifting, and it doesn't slip. The only mechanical problem I can see with the transmission is that sometimes when I shift from park to drive or reverse it will take a few seconds to go into gear which I assume is a valve body issue. The truck only has just over 95K miles on it but it's done alot of pretty heavy towing during those miles, mainly my father in law's 5th wheel camper and my mowing/landscaping trailers. This is my favorite truck and I want to keep it in great shape so I don't mind having the trans rebuilt if that's what it needs but it's not really giving me what I would consider normal symptoms that would suggest it's time for a rebuild. What do you E4OD experts think?
