do i need to wait for the light to go out?

My 6.9 starts well. Often if im in a hurry ill get in and fire it up and then notice that the wts light is still on.does it hurt anything for it to be running and the gp's still getting power?

I was told long ago to wait for the light to go out even if its 100 degrees outside by a top notch for mechanic who also owner of an idi at the time. I always wait and I have had very few problems with glow plugs

The GP's glow at ~1500* when fully heated, the fuel burning during power stroke (combustion) can be considerably higher, which could burn off or split the GP element tip. Why can't you wait for 15 seconds or less?

Edit: I always wait for the WTS on my PSD, hell'va job to replace the GP's in it.

I've always made a point to wait for the light to go out, even if it's 100 degrees out. I believe that my truck still has the original GPs, since the PO's maintenance log didn't indicate that they have ever been replaced. The truck fires right up when it's cold out. While I can't attribute the longevity of the GPs to anything I've done, I have to assume that being patient has helped them last since I've owned the truck.

Bill, how would it split the glowplugs apart?

My general order of piloting the psd spaceship: get in, turn the key, put my seatbelt on, then start it. So I usually wait, but not always.

I'm not buying it. If your engine starts without GP help, good for you. After a cold start, the GP system cycles on a few times while the engine is warming up, so the factory couldn't have thought it was bad to run the engines with the GPs energized once in a while.

If you are in that much of a hurry and the engine will start, go ahead home to your squeeze and leave that family stranded out in the cold, needing only a $.50 part to get back on the road.

If the glow plugs being energized while the engine is running will ruin them, why do they after-glow to help heat up the cylinders? Once my engine is warm, I don't wait for them anymore. My PSD computer shuts them off as soon as I start up and the engine is already warm. Then again, they only glow for about 2 seconds when the engine is warm anyway. My last IDI had push button plugs, and I never used them after the first start of the day. It's an easier way to deal with this issue rather than listen to half of us tell you one thing, and the other half of us tell you another.

I think you should wait because the glow plugs are 6v, when the engine is off you have 12v, that is the way they are supposed to work, but with the engine running you have 14.5v and I think that will burn the plugs out sooner.

Man after 10 hrs on my feet im ready to scram home.plus im under strict orders no overtime for any reason. Hes so serius that hes got the alarm set to automatically set @5:03! Once it goes off i gotta call the alarm company plus the fuzz show up imediatly.when all that happens im in hot water.

Who the hell can't wait 15 second. I can understand if your locked out of work and that roach coach burrito is a rumblin' downstairs, but hell, put your seatbelt on after you turn the key and they'll be done buy the time your belt clicks. I'd rather be safe than sorry, I personally want to put a switch before the GP relay so I can shut them off. I'm afraid of burning mine out because they seem to go through a cold start scinerio no matter what my engine temp is. I've fallowed the system and where it should conect to a thermo sensor it has a factory looking cap on the wire harness.

There are too many situations for glow plug cycling. I stand by what I said in my first post above.
If anyone doesn't believe that, then do as you damn well please.
