Should I pull the trigger or wait until I have my engine torn down?

Howdy friends and neighbors, I unfortunately have to rebuild my motor due to the fact that my blowby is so bad that the truck is now a hybrid (it burns fuel and oil :Thumbs Up). And I don't mean add a little oil here and there, I have to check the sump after I drive it to the gas station and fill it up before I leave from anywhere near or far.
So, I am going to buy some R&D piston rings and I'm just curious if I should wait until I have the motor apart to check and see if I need to worry about getting .020 over bore or just the standard 4.11 rings.
Anything helps,
Miles

Unless you have reason to suspect serious damage internally run a quart of Kano Kreen through the oil (Amazon has it). It made a huge difference in my oil consumption and is at least worth a shot unless you WANT to pull the motor apart.

That said I would wait to order rings until you see the bores. I'd hate to have to reorder and return parts if you plan on a quick rebuild and find out it needs more.

Do you know what the bore is now?
..020 rings requires an overbore from stock bore dimensions.

Try the stuff above, or look up auto rx on here.
Once along time ago, guys claimed it worked.

Disclaimer
Guys also purported the faccett lift pumps, so grain of salt and all...

Unless you have a crystal ball wait until you have the engine apart to order parts. True story, years ago I got a job because I was asked if I wanted to order parts before I tore down an engine. My reply was how do I know what I need until I get into it. Most interesting job interview I think I ever had.

I just used Kreen for the first time in trying to remedy a tick that is either a lifter or maybe a sticky valve. I went for the engine flush method as described on the label and after about 40 minutes of idling with 32oz of Kreen I noticed a positive effect which was a much smoother idle and the tick would come and go instead of remaining constant. I let the engine idle for a full 60 minutes as suggested on the label and then changed the oil & filter. The engine is much smoother, the tick still comes and goes but the Kreen absolutely helped the situation. I think I'll drive a while on this fresh oil and then try another flush with Kreen if the tick remains. I also reached out to Kano Labs to ask what ratio of Kreen to oil they recommend--it is not stated on the bottle--and they said 1oz-1.5oz of Kreen per quart of oil.

Dump a quart in the crankcase and leave it. You can treat it heavier if they tell you but you don't need to flush the kreen out if you just substitute one quart. The old bottle before the rebrand said to leave it in the oil. Pretty sure that's just them covering their backside in this lawsuit happy world. As with anything it's at your own risk but it didn't do any harm to mine and if you're expecting to pull the engine anyway what do you have to lose?

I ran it in mine for a minimum of a week. I don't remember if I did it a week or two before changing the oil or if it put it in with the fresh oil, that was several months ago.

Good to know you had no issues running a full quart. The difference in how the engine runs now is amazing. I've been driving the truck all day and it's so much smoother and the exhaust note sounds much better. Kano Labs for the win.

I got a quart on order. Not much to lose if I’m gonna end up rebuilding the motor. Thanks!
