Has anyone noticed lately that DP doesnt seem to do too many articles on older idi stuff? I have been buying them since they came out in 06 but gave up a few issues ago, because everything is the new stuff and when you finally spot an older truck in there and get all excited, you find out its had a cummins conversion.

I picked up the December issue today and browsed through it while waiting for a prescription at the store and noticed they had a section in there for anyone interested in buying a used truck and what to look for but when I looked closer, it was all electronic model trucks they listed, no idi.

I understand that our interest is probably a dying breed and that DP has to cater to a more modern crowd but it sure would be nice if someone would come out with a mag for vintage diesels.

I was kinda disappointed that there was no mention of IDI's in that issue. Even the Pre Super Duty PSD's don't get much coverage.

There are IDI articles from time to and there are more installments of "Project 300" to come. I believe we are right now in the beginning of an IDI revival. The reason I believe this is due to the exponential rise in popularity of diesel pickups. People even on this very forum are putting tremendous effort into performance building IDI's when years ago not many bothered. The aftermarket offers little support to IDI's so, there are a lot of custom one off parts being made plus products being offered by members like Agnem and Type4 which most of are hybrids of some kind themselves. 10 - 15 - 20 years ago you didn't see this. New pickups today make 400hp and 800ft/lbs stock. Today's diesel pickup owner has an itch to make theirs run with the pack whether it be old or new technology. I think we will see some IDI performance builds in DP in the near future. I suspect an IDI to make the cover.

Hope your right, War_Wagon. The only mention at all seems to be in the "Reader's Diesels" section, when a teenager fixes up an old IDI. Almost like "he'll move up to a 'real truck' someday".... just my opinion there.

On the other hand, didn't the subtitle used to say "Voice of the TurboDiesel Enthusiast" or something like that? It now says "The World's Largest Diesel Magazine." Makes a naturally-aspirated guy like myself feel a little better.

The mag sells to where the money is....Diesels are the hot rods of today as Hemi's and 427 SHOC and Boss 429's where of the past...

Gotta feed the machine and if the machine is 24v cummins and Duramax and 6.4 fords..then article those and be damned the rest...

You may very well be seeing adds for IDI parts in there very soon. : You may also want to start picking up issues of Diesel World. I suspect there may be a bit more IDI stuff going on in there soon. Not that I know anything....

I was going to mention Diesel World. Jim made the Rally this year and he has done an article on our little (compaired to TS or Scheid's) event for that magazine. Plus Jim is a IDI guy and posts here all the time.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I personally love reading the magazine write-ups on all the new trucks...

My favorite is Turbo Diesel Register. Some old timer in my RV park puts his last-month copies in the park library, and I snatch them up every time...

My favorite sections are the "chat" forums where happy Dodge owners write in to talk about the issues they are having with their trucks.

Some of the best start off with a sentence like this "I absolutely love my 2011 Dodge! The other day I had to take it to the dealer, where they had to replace the entire fuel injection system because I guess I got water into the fuel. Dealer says no-warranty so I am on the hook for the $12,000 repair bill. No big deal! I LOVE THIS TRUCK ! Oh and by the way my truck is getting 11 MPG with no load, and goes through DEF like Amy Winehouse goes through vodka, but I LOVE THIS TRUCK!"

The guy replying to the write-in always says "Awesome! Love that truck! Hey when you get it back you should throw a set of STAGE 4 injectors in there for $6,000, oh and a programmer and a $3,000 upgraded turbo, oh and some chrome lug nut caps! LOVE THAT TRUCK!"

As I approach 40 I realize that I will never be able to have the finances to do something like that. I often wonder what I am missing. I mean, lets go and but a new truck for $60,000, void the warranty and put another 20 grand of goodies into it, go out and break half of the truck and put another $15,000 into fixing it. Geez, I've put off a measley $60 oil change off for a week because the money wasn't there.

Goose - Those that I know who have done that sort of thing (bought new truck, poured money into it, broke stuff, rinse, repeat) have had the benefit of getting help from their two good friends, Visa and Mastercard.

I've put off the oil change this week too, for the same reason...

I too don't understand the menantality of new truck owners doing all that expensive "stuff" just for hp whish is another word for ego.. Money buys some of us what we are missing in life. Its a differant form of satisfaction they can't get any other way. Ever see the private car museums of the richy rich group of guys around.. How long did it take to amass that collection and whats the use of it. Take a superbird out for a 30 minute ride to show off some.. Those guys are much older than many on this forum. How they earned what they have is none of my concern. Someone like Jay Leno actually drive thir collection all the time. His position is he wants people to see and hear the cars from another era. If they break or wear out they will rebuild them. I also know he has some really trick cars too. I'm just saying he does it right.. What he has is seen more than what the other guys have stashed away where nobody can see them. What I have is what I have... Nothing special and I wouldn't try to make it any other way. I look at what some of the others have done to their rigs and sometimes its awsume. The thinking outside the box is what I enjoy reading about. Sometimes things don't work out like we thought they would. For most of us money is tight. We are in the same boat that many others are in... Living in credit card debt is not the way to live. I have lived that way most of my life and it sucks. A card should be emergancy cash when you need something.. Not a feeling that you "need" a set of $6000.oo injecters becasue someone is selling them or the next guy has them so why can't I have them too. Even if I could afford an expensive new truck I would not buy nor have one. I have lived my entire life with never owning a new car or truck. I plan to end that way. theres just nothing new I really want or can't live without. Its really shocking what the repairs of the nes stuff is. And if the big one hits and there is an emp none of those new trucks will be running. But one of out simple mechanically injected id engines with a ZF 5 speed can be rolled and bump started. Even without a starter or any battery we can still bump start these engine if we have a differant fuel shutoff type manual solenoid instead of the electricall one we have now. Gees.. I think all the big rigs of the 60 and 70 era had them..... Finally I say this to those on other forums with the all electronic diesels... Good luck at the dealerships with repair bills.. /wWhat you will be paying is more than I have invested in my rig and thats a sad thing too...

I'm pretty sure they tested EMP on several kinds of vehicles and even a large EMP didnt phase them.

This... There is definitely a growing market for older diesels. You see it in the forums for sure. But sadly they still cater to the new ones when there is a lot of info about older Chevys, Fords, and Dodges as well as older diesel cars. Maybe someday there will be a magazine directly catered to what we want. I was mentioned in Dp that it would have to happen that way and I would get that magazine in a second...
