Dana 50 problems

New member here, first post, this site is great. I have a 94 F250 4X4 Turbodiesel w/7.3L engine, bought it a few months ago and am working to get it fixed up to license it.

I just pulled the font "independant" (called TTB I think) suspension appart to to do brakes, U joints and find out what was wrong with the dana 50, when I pulled it out of the truck I found one broken spider gear, the other 3 gears were chewed up, the end of the pinion was ground off and the center pin had walk out into the ring gear and had been damaged.

I think the cheapest thing to do is to find a whole new used one. My question is, is this the correct plan of action and does anyone know where I can find either a whole new one or a whole set of used gears?

I would like to stick with the D50 for now, D60 down the road maybe.

if the r&p are damaged I would probably get a third member from a yard. one in good shape will probably run a couple hundred bucks.

The ring seems to be in good shap, the end of the pinion is ground away but the part of the pinion that meshes with the ring seems OK, and I may be able to still use it. would it be economical to buy the 4 spider gears and center pin and rebuild it.

The pinion may look OK but still be damaged. If it passes peices of the spider through it it could be bent or warped. It all really depends on how much you plan on having the truck in 4x4. I just did a quick search on e-bay and turned up nothing. You could try local slavage yards and se what a center section is worth. It might not be too bad. The D60 brings some serious coin in salvage but the 50 might not be too bad. If you want to try to get the parts tryNational Drivetrain. They probably wont list that on their website but they can come up with most any drivtrain part. Send them an e-mail with your requirements and the bill of materials number off the diff tag (if its still there) and they might be able to help.

Well, found someone who has the whole chunk and will sell it for a good price. Thanks for the help and advice, I think this way will be much cheaper and easier.
